Holding Out for a Hero, Book 3

Kate has always been everybody’s friend and the de-facto little sister to the Wyatt brothers. But her feelings for Todd Wyatt, the town’s hottest firefighter, run far beyond the sibling variety. Not that he’s ever noticed.

After years of nursing her crush, Kate decides it’s time to take action. Except she has one awkward little secret: she’s still a virgin. She hopes she can seduce Todd without him realizing just how inexperienced she is.

In Todd’s mind, Kate’s the sweet girl he teases and hits up for free cupcakes. One surprise kiss over the summer, though, and suddenly she’s jumped from the platonic side of his brain to the want-her-in-my-bed side. Even though the last thing he wants is to lose her friendship, his resistance to her determined seduction is slipping. Fast.

When malicious attacks on her bakery escalate, it soon becomes clear that for all Kate’s friends, she’s made at least one big enemy. And if they don’t figure it out soon, things could take a deadly turn.

Todd is the walking talking version of every woman’s wet dream in the town of Wyattsville. He’s a firefighter and the youngest of the Wyatt brothers, but since the two oldest are now married this also means Todd is the most eligible bachelor. His womanizing ways haven’t gone unnoticed in the small town and women usually know the score when they decide to hop into bed with him, but lately his thoughts have become occupied with naughty images of the local bakery owner. Todd knows the score where Kate’s concerned. What Todd didn’t anticipate was the determination of a woman hell-bent on getting laid for the first time.

Kate works hard and loves what she does, but with the reality of her friends having recently been married, she’s starting to see her life isn’t as fulfilled as she liked to believe. After an incident at a drunken bachelorette party some months back, Kate can’t keep her mind off Todd. Common sense says it would be bad for her to pursue a relationship with him and besides he hasn’t shown her the slightest bit of interest in anything other than in her cupcakes, but Kate can’t help but wonder. She solicits some help from a friend and sets out a plan to seduce Todd for a one-night stand. After all once she’s had him that should be enough, right?

This story picks up months after the second book in the series with two people who think they don’t deserve the other because of past experience or lack thereof. Since the relationship was already heavily based on friendship, it’s easy to see how it could become awkward for either character to make the first move. It was wonderful to see Kate come out of her shell and prove to everyone that she’s not someone to be ignored. Although the story seemed a bit short and could have benefited by expanding more on the bakery attacks plot, the focus was mostly put on the couple and how they do or don’t overcome their own relationship shortcomings.

Ms. Stevens’ did a amazing job carrying through all of the necessary character emotions with plenty of scorching sex scenes. I would definitely recommend to any fan of contemporary romance.
