I have no idea what I am going to write about today so you’ll have to bear with me…but I have to be honest, what I want from today’s bash is a feeling of what readers want from us romance writers. Are we really delivering on our promise of giving you guys a great read when you part with your well-earned money.
What would you like to see more of? Which kind of heroes and heroines are the ones that stick in your memory for the longest? Or forever?
Because I write across the genres, I sometimes think that I am still looking for the ‘special something’ that we all want when we buy a book. My bestseller to date is my Victorian historical, “The Arrival of Lily Curtis” yet for the following two books, I was compelled to write contemporary. What do you think? If you’ve read both my contemporaries and historical, did any of my characters resonate with you? Is there a secondary character you’d like to see more of? I’m all ears!!
Here’s the blurb for Lily & Andrew’s story in case you missed it!

At the mention of an arranged marriage, Elizabeth Caughley feels her life is over at the age of three and twenty….so she hatches an escape plan. She will reinvent herself as a housemaid. Overnight, Elizabeth becomes Lily…

Viscount Westrop wants nothing more than his legacy to be passed to his own son one day. Even though he feels insurmountable pity for the unborn child already, he knows how much pain a broken promise can cause and will do what is right. But with the arrival of his new housemaid, his plans are thrown into disarray. Lily is funny, feisty and the most beautiful creature on earth – Andrew is thunderstruck. But if anyone suspects how much he wants to ravish her and endlessly love her, Andrew’s lineage will be in peril. And he cannot let that happen…

  1. Hi Rachel (**waves madly**) Nice seeing you here. I enjoy contemporary and historicals equally. I’m just now discovering shapeshifters and other paranormal elements. Personally, the era doesn’t matter, it’s the characters and plot. What makes unforgettable characters? Plucky women with a bit of snark woven with a smidgen of vulnerablity. Alpha males with a gooey chocolate center. Have you ever read Linda Howard’s “Mackenzie’s Mountain”? This one always sticks in my mind as one of my all-time favs.

  2. Ooh, I have read that, Vonnie and I still have Storm’s Interlude in my TBR pile too! i’m adding Mackenzie’s Mountain to the list right now.

  3. I’m totally into romantic suspense and I would LOVE to see more sequels. When I bond with some characters, I want to be able to revisit them from time to time.

  5. Hi Val & Chris!

Isn’t it hard just to choose one genre?? I can’t even stick with just one to write, let alone read, lol!

Val, I’ve just posted another blog about my romantic suspense writing, funnily enough…

  7. I like many different genres. The characters that stick with me usually have flaws. I’m not into reading about perfect characters. That doesn’t appeal to me. I also like enemies to lovers stories. I like to see them bicker and spar before they fall in love.

  8. I read from multiple genres and enjoy them all. There are some themes that I don’t think Iwill tire of and they are stories about second chances and reunions. I like them in all genres.

  9. I tend to read a lot of paranormal and romantic suspense… if the book combines those two.. I am in Heaven.

  10. I find the concept of time travel interesting; romance, and how it was different in different eras, and the conflict when one era is misplaced in another.

  11. Wow, thanks for such a great response to my musing, guys! All in all, I think we pick up a book to suit our mood at the time, would you agree? I have no idea what makes me reach for an historical over a contemporary romance suspense or a biography over a romantic comedy but I read them all!

All I do know is that the characters decide my next genre of book I’m going to write. They ‘speak’ to me and I am forced to listen…and then I know what I am writing!
