I knew when I opened this book, I was in for a good time. I’d read other works by Ms. Mitchell and fell in love with the characters. Her writing style is nicely paced and I really felt like I was there in Florida with Joey and Aaron, watching my best friends figure out life and love. The supporting cast in this book is fantastic as well. I got to catch up with prior characters and was glad to. What really made this book memorable for me was Joey. I’d met him before in Diving In Deep and I wasn’t sure I’d like him, but I’m glad I got this book, because in just over two hundred pages, he really grew on me. I loved the description of him. Cotton candy hair. I’d never thought of describing someone’s hair like cotton floss, but from the moment he grabbed Seth from the mashed van, I was sold. I also loved the heart he displayed. Yes, he’s in social services and works with kids, but there were times when he could’ve turned up his nose and didn’t. His ability to make everyone feel important imprinted itself on me. Oh, and did I mention his klutzy tendency? I didn’t want to see him hurt, but the fact that he could trip over his own feet endeared him to me. Yeah, once I closed this book, I sighed happily.
Aaron…where to start with him…he’s a good guy. Really, he is. What he’s also is a bit misunderstood, and by his own hand. The poor guy has a lot on his broad shoulders. Yes, at first he wasn’t my favorite character because he came off callous, but when I knew why, I felt awful for not liking him. As I said, he’s a good guy, and totally in love with Joey (even when he doesn’t want to admit it) and it came off as rather cute. He’s the master of control, whereas Joey is aloof. The combination couldn’t have been better.
If you want a book that is guaranteed to rivet you, grab a box of tissues, prepare to laugh, and nab a copy of Collision Course. You’ll be glad you did. I was. Totally worth 5 cherries.
