Roguish, rough and ready, Russ is a rake who refuses to be tamed. But even for a master like him, there comes a time when loving ’em and leaving ’em loses a lot of its charm.

Now, this wild child is looking for someone with a little more staying power, and a cutie with a pinch of cardamom and clove in his cappuccino is about to change Russ’s life for keeps.

What do you do when you just want someone to love, but the someone you’re interested in isn’t run-of-the-mill? Check their coffee preferences!

I love a story that’s off the beaten path. Cardamom and Clove is one of those stories. Willa Okati delivers characters that are realistic. I felt like I was right there at the coffee shop playing the voyeur with Russ. Russ is methodical — he knows what he wants, just not exactly. And his means by which he chooses his partners is unique. Made me wonder if anyone else is quite so picky when it comes to choosing a partner or if it’s a reflection of how society at large pairs up. Still, I liked how he didn’t jump at every blatant offer and I liked how Ms Okati doesn’t fall into some stereotypical traps. Russ and Calen are realistic and I couldn’t help but like watching them find each other.

One of the only issues I have with this story is that it’s short. I wanted to know a bit more about Russ prior to the story and to see things through the eyes of Calen. I liked that I got to experience the relationship through Russ’s eyes, but I wondered how Calen felt — had he desired Russ earlier? Had he considered making a move? Or had he made a move? And Russ, I liked this forthright, yet, planned approach to finding a partner, but I wondered what happened in his past to make him so reluctant to go out on a limb.

If you want a story that’s a little left of center but will leave you with a smile, then you need to read Cardamom and Clove. I give this story 4 cherries.
