For almost thirteen years, Vivia has been a child. Now, suddenly, she’s a woman. That’s startling enough, but she’s pretty sure she can learn to handle it. She’s not so confident, though, about other things. She’s begun to know what people are feeling. She can change what they’re feeling. She can make things happen—make water boil, make the wind around the campfire slacken—just by willing them to happen. All this is unsettling, but even scarier is the fact that she’s been careless with her new-found powers. Her older brother knows what she can do, what she’s becoming. Witchery, he calls it, and he also knows what will cure her. Now Vivia has a choice to make, and she’d better make it fast.

It’s never too soon to plan ahead for the future.

Vivia was a brave and mature character who seemed much older than her chronological age. Some of this was due to the people and situations she was exposed to while growing up on the road, but it also seemed to be part of her natural personality. When I first began reading, I wondered if this was supposed to be written for a young adult audience. Based on Vivia’s personality and all of the unseemly things she was exposed to during her family’s travels, though, I soon realized that this was definitely meant for adult readers.

There were pacing issues. After the characters were introduced, it took a while for the plot to develop the amount of conflict in it that I was hoping to see. While I still enjoyed the storyline itself quite a bit, the slow beginning surprised me. I had to encourage myself to keep reading until it picked up and I figured out what the choice was that Vivia was going to have to make.

One of my favorite pieces of this tale had to do with all of the cultural differences that exist between our modern world and the rural, medieval-like one that Vivia lived in. Everything from the medical treatments that were available to people in that area to how they dealt with dangerous troublemakers was nothing at all like life in the twenty-first century. I genuinely felt as though I were visiting a society that was completely different from my own. That’s exactly what I want to find when I read stuff set long ago and somewhere far away.

Vivia, Waking should be read by anyone who enjoys the fantasy genre.

Love may not be enough to save their marriage when one promise must be broken if another is kept.

Solemn Vows shows how life goes on after three young children lose their parents in an accident. Newly married Quinn and his wife Meredith uphold Quinn’s promise to look after the children and this at times is humorous, not exactly funny, but lighthearted.

I loved how the children wormed themselves into Meredith’s heart. She hadn’t wanted children and this instant family came as a shock to her. The two adults struggle through bad and good times which puts a strain on their first year of marriage.

Throughout the book Quinn often refers to Meredith as Marigold. This is puzzling. I could only think of two reasons for this. Either the author changed the name, but didn’t catch all of the changes needed, or this was the pet name for Meredith. If the latter then I felt some explanation should be given as to why Quinn used this name. The use of Marigold irritated me every time it came up and spoiled an otherwise good book.

A good premise with a lot of thought gone into how both adults and children would react. Gives a cosy feeling when reading about the instant family.

And that’s only the beginning. Her cosmic do-over also manages to scramble eighty years of world history.

Racing against time, the movie-loving academic and the high-strung diva form an uneasy alliance to unravel the mystery before the next day’s induction ceremony.
While they spend a stressful but enlightening day trying to restore order, the Producer takes Bette on a bumpy multi-media ride of her own. As she sees favorite film roles elude her and her onetime husband marry another, she mourns all she has sacrificed by starring in Gone with the Wind and fears her derailed history can’t be fixed.

Seeing that Patrice and Dana’s investigation is stalled, Bette gets permission to make a cameo appearance on earth and lend them a hand. In the process, the trio learns new lessons about film, fate and roads not taken.

It’s well known that Bette Davis wanted to play Scarlett O’Hara in Gone With the Wind, this book delves into what would have happened if Bette had gotten the part and how it would affect the here and now.

I enjoyed this book. The main characters (three women) were at times happy, woeful and funny. Bette is looking down from the afterlife while Dana is the drive behind the new museum gifted by Bette to her home town in Massachusetts. The celebrity to open this museum is Patrice Clarke, a star who is pumped up by her own self importance.

The fun comes from Bette being given the part by the Producer in the afterlife and it affects history more than just the film. Everything changes to the point where even Bette decides enough is enough.

Well written and I have to compliment the author on the research into the stars and history of film. It must have taken her months to get all the information together. Well done!

This doesn’t mean the book is a catalogue of what happened in the past against what happens now, the story flows perfectly and the finale is not a bald statement of fact, more a gentle finish to a well written book.

Shiloh Nilsen lives at one end of the street. Nathan Conti lives at the other. In all her eighteen years, they’ve never met in the middle. Why? Because he attends a special school for psychics in Wyoming while she goes to their neighborhood public school, Dillon High, right there in Montana.

Nothing changes until Shiloh loses a treasured family heirloom–a ring that dates back centuries. Desperate to find it before her mom figures out it’s missing, Shiloh crashes a birthday party just to meet Nate. If the local newspaper is right, he has psychic gifts. She hopes one of them will help her out of a mess she can only blame on herself.

Nate reluctantly agrees to accompany her to a local ghost town, the last place she wore the ring. With the weather getting worse by the minute, they search everywhere she hiked until the skies open up and they’re forced to take shelter in the ruins. Huddled there, they talk about his psychic abilities, a conversation that opens Shiloh’s mind to what’s really out there.

Unfortunately, Nate’s conclusion about the ring’s location isn’t at all what Shiloh was expecting. Instead of getting closure, she’s faced with a new dilemma. She can either confess everything to her mom, who will be crushed, or she can confront the person who has the ring, a guy who, according to Nate, gives off some very bad vibes.

Shiloh decides to crash a birthday party, determined to talk Nate into using his powers to help her out. Having lost her great-great-great grandmother’s ring, she needs to take Nate to Farlin – even with the ghosts there – and have him help her find the ring. Nate and Shiloh both find each other attractive, but their worlds couldn’t be further apart. Shiloh is from the wrong side of town, Nate’s family is rich and he’s just graduated from an expensive academy geared towards people with magical gifts. The more time they spend together, the more complicated their relationship gets. Can they each find their right path?

This is a fun and really interesting story. I’ve not read any of the previous ones in this series and was very happy to find none of the back-story was really needed. Both Nate and Shiloh are fairly young – nineteen and seventeen respectively – and so while there is some romance it’s all fairly sweet and teenager-ish – friends who are attracted to each other etc. Aside from some chaste (and just a few teen-steamy) kisses there’s no physical romance, but a delightful emotional connection that flourishes into an even better romantic relationship.

I thoroughly enjoyed the plot in this story – finding the mystery of Shiloh’s lost ring as compelling as Shiloh and Nate both exploring their own powers and coming to terms with the magical world neither of them have much experience in. In a number of ways this felt very much to me like a coming-of-age story and I’d actually recommend it equally as a YA style of story as a sweet, emotional and slightly romantic read for grown ups as well. With strong and multi-layered characters, a few excellent plots and some fantastic pacing I eagerly drank up every page of this story and fully plan to look out for the others in this series. Shiloh and Nate were two wonderful characters and I loved watching them get to know each other, push each other’s magical boundaries and solve the puzzle together. The fact they ended up with a Happy Ever After and a beautiful relationship was just icing on the cake.

For a sweet, happy and well-paced story this is one I’d happily recommend.

Does anyone ever wonder what really happened to Frankenstein’s monster? The story goes that he went off into the distance to die. However, Mary Patterson Thornburg has a different story to tell, one from those who knew him or his “father” the doctor.

Packed into this short tale is quite a bit of story. Set in England during the Regency, we get an inside view of the doctor, and his creation, mostly from the point-of-view of an English explorer to the far north. This explorer, Robert Walton, rescued the doctor in the icy wilderness then heard a good tale of his own. He wrote to his sister with some interesting observations.

Robert comes home but then leaves again, returning to the North Pole, and this time, things won’t go so well for him. He finds himself in a dire situation, and the “monster” approaches him. From here, we get his side of the story.

The tone of this writing gives the feel of the era without being too much. It is a quick-paced account, and the years fly by within a few pages. However, not a lot happens until half-way through. I found myself wishing more of the main action was mixed in with the mundane details. Character development is good for such a short rendition. We get to know the characters with a few well-chosen words, and come to understand them.

The story may be short, but it was worth peeking into the life of a legend and hearing a new account of what “really” happened.

Florentine Enchantment by Judith B Glad offers the dilemma of a well-educated woman in times of old, in Italy. The main character is a strong, intelligent woman, but desires not learning, but love. We have her story as if spoken directly from her mouth.

It is an interesting approach, although some is merely setting the stage for the story, and is somewhat slow going. We need to wade through long explanations before we get so much as a conversation.

The setting is utterly magnificent; from the scents of olive trees to the sculptures in the square, this writer puts us in the scene: the city of Firenze, and impact of the sensual sculptures. Desire is inflamed as if from sculpture, and it is then that our heroine meets Vido. Is it love? It seems something else… and this story moves along quickly from that point on.

Intriguing? Yes. And we can put the belief issue on hold. Florentine Enchantment is original; in fact, wonderfully creative, and imaginative. The whole point of the story, however, seems to be to get to a particular scene; and those who read hot specifically for the heat might enjoy this.

Alyssha promised her father she wouldn’t return to Bandor, and for six years she has kept that promise. But the hit-and-run victim she found dying on a Granville street was a man she met in that other world, and his family won’t know what happened to him unless she goes back to tell them. She really has no choice, has she?

And the other dead man, the body lying in a willow grove near the road to Bandor Gan… Finding him there was just a terrible coincidence, wasn’t it?

Alyssha fervently hopes so. Yes, six years ago Bandor had troubles – cruel and repressive laws, workers exploited in the city’s woolen mills and the northern mines. Growing pains of the budding industrial revolution. Some people were angry, ready to fight. But these problems seem smaller and easier to solve, somehow, than the problems she’s left behind. Bandor is cleaner, kinder, more peaceful, more right, than the frantic world she inherited in 21st Century America.
Anyway, the problems aren’t hers to solve. There’s so much country here that these troubles don’t touch. She’ll go to the nomadic village where her friends are, where she was happy all those years ago. She’ll study with the old kura, learning to be a teacher, a healer. Her life will mean more, here among these cheerful, pleasant people, than it would mean in Granville. She’ll find her home here, and she’ll be content.

Won’t he?

Can the reality of Bandor ever live up to Alyssha’s dreams?

Alyssha’s life has been on hold ever since her visit to Bandor. Even though she was only twelve when she went through the door to Bandor, she knew in her heart that the other universe was her home. Only a promise to her father has kept her from crossing over again. I must admit that I have mixed feelings about Alyssha’s situation. On one hand, I admire her patience and determination. On the other hand, I can’t help but feel that Alyssha has missed out on so much. By living in her dreams, she essentially withdrew from the real world. However, Alyssha seems to be okay with this, and despite her lack of close relationships, she is a sweet young woman, and I looked forward to getting to know her as I read.

Ms. Thornburg did an excellent job of creating an alternate universe. I found the similarities and differences between the two universes interesting. However, I must let readers know that this is not a book to race through. In order to truly appreciate this book, readers need to take their time and really soak up the atmosphere of the world that Ms. Thornburg has created. That being said, I did find the sections detailing the political situation and the various clans and factions a little slow. While it definitely provided useful information key to understanding the world Alyssha was living in, it was a bit hard to get into those sections.

Once in Bandor, Alyssha finds herself in a strange love triangle. Kardl has changed quite a bit since she last saw him, and Alyssha isn’t sure if anything remains of the boy she fell in love with. Another man has also attracted her attention. I must say that Alyssha’s romantic dilemmas are resolved in unexpected ways, and I enjoyed watching Alyssha mature and learn to live and love in the real Bandor, and not just the one in her fantasies.

I must say that I loved the ending of this tale. I can’t say much without spoiling it, but I will say that someone very important to Alyssha makes a decision that I never foresaw and yet it made complete sense. It definitely left me with a smile on my face.

The Kura is certainly an enjoyable tale. Readers looking to lose themselves in a tale of love and friendship should definitely give The Kura a try.

Every old house has secrets, but most of them aren’t quite as sad as the ones lurking in Claire’s new investment property.

The pacing was incredibly well done. While this is a full-length piece, at times it reminded me of a short story because of how concisely it was written. The author chose her words carefully. Every single scene flowed seamlessly into the next one. This made it possible for her to pack an incredible amount of storytelling into two hundred and sixty four pages. I was in awe of just how many different subplots Ms. Dusenbury was able to weave together!

The only thing I would have liked to see added to this tale would have been a little more character development. Ms. Dusenbury did an excellent job of showing me who Claire was as a person. The most important supporting characters would have flourished if they’d been given more chances to display their personalities when the plot allowed for it, although this is a very minor criticism of an otherwise wonderful mystery.

Yes, I figured out what probably happened to Dorcas fairly early on. This wasn’t an issue for me, though, because there were so many other things going on with the characters simultaneously. There’s also a difference between knowing how something happened and seeing how the events of one day can ripple through the lives of so many different people. I really enjoyed watching the rest of the plot unfold regardless of how quickly I guessed what the ending might be.

This can be read as a standalone novel. I haven’t read the first two books in the series yet, but I had no trouble at all figuring out who the characters were or what was happening to them.

I’d heartily recommend A House of Her Own to anyone who is also a fan of paranormal mysteries.
