Cops, heat and a rent boy with an attitude…what can go wrong?

I love the work of HC Brown, so when I saw this book, I had to snap it up. I’m glad I did. I wanted to catch up with the characters from the Cops and Floggers series – I read book 2 first. Now, reading these out of order isn’t a bad thing. The characters stand alone well and I loved it.

I had to know what would happen next because the characters intrigued me. Tyler wants to save world, one rent boy at a time. He’s strong, tough and endearing. I liked him right away. Then there’s Maverick. He’s a piece of work–which the author wrote him well, I have to say. I could see him and could hear him talk. He was that vivid. His attitude was a trip.

The one quibble I had with the book was the alternating points of view. When the story was told from Tyler’s POV, the story took place in third person. But when Maverick was telling his side, it was all in first person. While that might not be a problem from some readers, I had a hard time with it.

Still, I’m glad I read this book and can’t wait for the next one!! If you want a book that sizzles, then this might be the one for you.

When Vice Detective Del Hood receives a call out to investigate a muscular, tattooed man in black hanging around the entrance to a sex shop, he believes the smart-mouthed Danny Rose is trouble with a capital T. Problem is the moment he pats him down and runs his hands over his hard body, a connection between them sizzles.

Could Danny be the arrogant, wisecracking sub of his dreams?

Detective Del Hood is called to a BDSM club when the owner is nervous about a strange man loitering. Del watches the man and when he goes to question Danny all Del’s instincts scream that this boy is the perfect sub for him. But Danny is looking for his brother and despite the instant and hot chemistry between himself and Del, Danny won’t let himself get sidetracked from helping his brother. Del finds he can help Danny out, in more ways than one.

I found this to be a sexy, super short hot story. The attraction and chemistry between Del and Danny was smoking hot and almost instant. I was kept a little off balance, as the point of view of the story swaps around from Del’s first person, to Danny’s third person, but the story-line was simple enough I managed to keep up with everything. I initially enjoyed the plotline of Danny searching for his brother, Thorn, but found that a large scene reuniting the two of them just before the middle of the book really bogged down the story to my mind. It felt a little like Del and Danny’s relationship and chemistry sparkled until Danny and Thorn were reunited, then the entire focus of the story switched to the brothers. Then afterwards the focus again switched completely back to Del and Danny. I feel if the scenes had blended together a bit better, or if the brother’s scene wasn’t quite as history and info-dumping, then the flow of the story would have felt a lot easier and smoother to my mind.

There are a strong cast of secondary characters, most of whom I found not only interesting, but intriguing as well. I have a feeling that Thorn and a possibly one of Del’s Dom buddies are being set up for future books down the road. I admit I found this book good enough and the concept fresh enough that I’d be interested in looking into future stories when they come out.

I also enjoyed the pacing of the sexual relationship between Del and Danny. Although they had chemistry and sizzle between them from practically the first page, they didn’t actually jump into bed until much further into the story. I found this extra time helped me get to know them both as characters before the sex over-rode everything else in the story. Danny is seriously into his kink – pain, predominantly – and some readers might find the power plays and struggles between Danny and Del a little too much for them. I found the sex and scenes were written tastefully but have to admit it’s a bit edgier and harder than you can often find in erotic romances. They don’t do a light spanking scene and move on, this book seems directed at readers who like a bit more edge in their reading material.

A hot, sexy and strongly kinky BDSM M/M erotic romance, this should appeal to many readers who want a bit more bite with their erotica.

Love and remembrance

Precious memories that one never imagines could be lost have a way of fading over time, to a point when uncertain they were ever real, rendering them as ghosts in the machine. Yet reminders, both passionate and brutal tempt them back as cherished thoughts and at times nightmarish visions.

As their world once more spirals out of control to the ravages of war, Trevor and Victoria find themselves amidst a torrent of beautiful and painful moments relived. Foremost for them is the safety of their twenty-year-old son, Miles. The distress Victoria endures over his departure for school in Glasgow is further complicated when Trevor reveals a secret he has hidden from her for years.

Once more the question of “How far would one go to save the one they love?” is thrust upon them, with unforeseeable consequences. Has time run out for all … or will they survive with an unimaginable bequest of time?

Letting go isn’t an easy thing to do, but sometimes it’s completely necessary.

One of the things I’ve come to appreciate the most about Mr. Botzenhart’s writing style is how much attention he pays to the small details in his work. When he talked about how a character reacted to a specific piece of news, I could imagine exactly what that person looked and sounded like as they heard what was going on. There was just as much care taken with the settings as well. This makes his tales a lot of fun to read.

There were pacing issues in the beginning. The narrator spent a great deal of time reintroducing the characters and explaining what they’ve been up to since their last adventure. As much as I liked catching up with them, this did slow down the pacing of the plot quite a bit. It took me a while to get into the storyline because of this.

Trevor’s secret was handled nicely. I did have a pretty good guess about what it might be because of my familiarity with this series, but the author still sneaked in a few surprises about it for me along the way. What I liked the most about Trevor’s secret was seeing how it affected the rest of the plot. It fit the tone of this book really well. I can’t say much else about it without giving away spoilers, of course, but it was exactly the sort of thing I’d expect from this character.

This is the third instalment in the Out of Time series. While it can be read as a standalone story, there was some nice character development that only readers who are already familiar with the main characters will pick up on.

I’d recommend A Bequest of Time to anyone who loves steampunk science fiction.

These boys are guaranteed to melt the screen while they put out fires.

I love a good male-male story. Sexy, fun and engaging. This is one of those stories, but there is so much more to the tale than just sex. Zac and Ryan are white hot, especially when they get together and I had to know what would happen for these two guys. I raced through the book and wanted more when I finished.

There were a few things that held up my enjoyment of the story. While I liked Ryan and Zac, the romance seemed rather quick. I know this is a short story and there are only so many words, but it felt like the development between them was a tad rushed. Another thing that could’ve been improved was the speed with which Ryan and Zac went from sex to the rougher stuff. Now it wasn’t as rough as it could be, but I wanted to see a tick more emotion behind it, especially with the things Zac had gone through. I had a hard time figuring Zac out. I liked that he was a player and free with his affections, but I wasn’t always sure how to take him. He did intrigue me, so kudos on that.

That said, the book still features a white hot storyline and while the characters are flawed, that’s what endeared them to me. If you’re looking for something with a little bite and a lot of heat, then this might be the book for you.

David has muscle to spare. Tall, dark, and sinfully handsome, he’s doing odd jobs until he gets his start-up off the ground. As far as David’s concerned, Bree’s lush curves don’t need improving, just a man who can appreciate them. He’ll definitely give her all the exercise she needs.

An idea came to her, and she amusingly completed an employee request form, asking her husband to do his marital duties.

Rob was stunned when he received the form mistakenly sent out by Jennifer’s assistant. Well, if his lovely wife wanted him to perform his duties, he would undertake them. Only, it wouldn’t be what she was asking for…

What if you found the love of your life in a phone call? Each of the authors in this anthology brings us a story of just that. These women are in need of some muscle and help around the house. What they get is not only the help but a happy ever after. Three of the stories show us how the couples come together while the last story gives readers a look at the owner of the company and her adventure. What a great business Jennifer has come up with and the added benefits make it all the more better.

Got Muscle? By Tina Donahue is a sweet story about finding love. Having been transferred to London, Bree has no idea who to call when she needs a man’s strength. When she calls for help and David arrives she is surprised at the instant connection. Knowing that she is a large girl Bree never thought that a man like David would ever look past that and see what she truly was inside. I loved David and seeing their relationship take shape made for a wonderful read. When Bree opens up and lets go of her insecurities, the two burn up the pages.

Ménage at Mealtime by Bella Settarra is a great story. I enjoyed watching the two men find a way into Naomi’s heart. With James and Aaron’s help, she begins to see how beautiful she truly is. Not only did the main characters grab my attention but I enjoyed the secondary characters as well. Love is strong and emotions run high in this story. I loved seeing Naomi blossom and find out what she truly wants and deserves.

Calculated Risk by Michelle Roth gives us the story of Stella and Ian. The two are great together. Their attraction is there right from the start and grows into something much deeper. Ian is a good man and tries to do things by the book but his attraction to Stella is too strong. Not only is she a beautiful woman but she is smart and friendly. It was nice to see the two find their way to a happy ending. Life brings Stella and Ian together but it is up to them to fight for it.

Marital Duties by Jennifer Denys is Jennifer’s story. She and Rob are happily married but it seems that lately they have been too busy and hard at work to do anything but fall asleep once they finish their days. She longs for the good old days when they were carefree and spontaneous. When Jennifer’s assistant emails Rob a contract that Jennifer left on her desk the fun begins. Their story is a sweet story. I enjoyed seeing the two reconnect and enjoy themselves.

I enjoyed each of the stories in this anthology. They are fast paced and hot reads. Emotions and sexual tension run rampant in these tales keeping you interested all the way through. Can you imagine making that phone call and finding love on the other end? This storyline was a wonderful concept and I would not mind coming back for more.

Wanting variety in your sexual lust? Then come to Lindsey Park Manor.

A weekend of BDSM activities for beginners. That was what James Shaw had booked at Lindsey Park Manor. He was now anxious about telling his wife, Caroline. In the past, they had tried out various implements at home, and were keen to take it further—even considering joining a ‘swingers’ site—but it was quite daunting doing anything with others! As they progress through the various events—cropping in the stables, fellatio in the ballroom, and an unusual fox hunt—they have to deal with animosity, jealousy and the dropping of inhibitions, as all of them grow in their knowledge of a lifestyle which is exciting, yet challenging.

Just as the dynamics of their threesome change considerably, a further surprise awaits them at the end of the weekend.

James and Caroline’s marriage is definitely stable enough to include a bit of exploring and boy do they explore on their weekend retreat. The ultimate question is: where Mark will fit in, if at all.

I really liked James and Caroline from the beginning. It is clear to me they are both looking to spice things up and make their relationship stronger. They clearly care and love deeply for one another. Another aspect of these characters I appreciated was their vulnerability at times. Caroline in not knowing how she feels about the lifestyle and the things James wants to potentially explore. James who seems always the rock in the relationship, yet experiencing his own insecurities as they explore more about themselves both as individuals and as a couple. It make them more realistic and believable.

Mark is a character I did not learn too much about throughout the process. He clearly was a caring man who just wanted to find his place. I like that he is attracted to Caroline and respects his friend to allow him to set the pace and is just thankful for any involvement he is allowed. He is definitely someone I would have liked to have gotten to know a bit more.

The BDSM element in the story is something I appreciated. For the most part it was fairly accurate. It is a topic I am very familiar with and I only noticed one or two inconsistencies. For example, the author used the world flog in one scene when it was really a spanking not a flogging. Additionally, I think how the roles in the relationship were determined I would have like to have seen more of. For example it is clear by the end of the story Mark is more of a switch than a Dominant. It would have been interesting to see how he came to this conclusion. These are really minor things, and overall the average reader would probably no pick up on them. Compared too many other stories on BDSM this one is accurate as to the emotional development/discovery which I appreciate. It shows how important the decision is and that it is as much an emotional growth as it is a kink one.

I would certainly recommend this story to others, and I actually plan on doing so. Plus it has some interesting plot twists that really leave you wanting more in the end.

It is also there where his promise is fulfilled while other promises from both the past and present are revealed with devastating consequences.

No one can deny the power of love, but that power is about to be stretch to its limits.

Trevor’s character development was phenomenal. As much as I liked him in the last book, I became an even bigger fan of him in this one. He’s changed quite a bit since I first met him, but all of Trevor’s personal growth makes sense given everything he’s been through so far. Some of my favorite scenes involved this character remembering those previous experiences and changing his behavior as a result of what he learned from them. They were incredibly well done.

The places Trevor visited during the course of his adventures were etched vividly into my imagination. One of the things I appreciate the most about this author’s writing style is how much thought he puts into his word selection. Mr. Botzenhart can sketch out what a room looks, sounds, and feels like in a handful of sentences, yet his descriptions are so complete that I can see exactly what he’s talking about when I close my eyes. This is a big part of the reason why I get so excited about checking out new stories from him as soon as they’re ready.

There’s something to be said for conversational dialogue. The other major reason why I enjoy Mr. Botzenhart’s stories so much is that his characters speak in such organic and relatable ways. Science fiction content aside, their conversations sound like something I’d overhear while walking down the street as opposed to something that bubbled up in the author’s mind before he wrote it down.

This is the second tale in the Out of Time series. While it can technically be read out of order or on its own, I strongly recommend picking up Clockwork Heart first. There are certain parts of the character and plot development that will be especially thrilling for readers who are already familiar with this universe.

Everyone needs to read A Flaw in the Mechanism. Simply put, it was perfect!

Medicine has its limits, but sometimes a great doctor can push past them.

This story blended romance and science fiction together seamlessly. It took a little while for the latter to show up due to other subplots that needed to be explored first, but it was well worth the wait. One of the things I enjoy about steampunk is how flexible it can be about borrowing intriguing concepts from other subgenres of science fiction, and there was definitely quite a bit of that going on here.

There was one scene in the middle of this tale that I would have liked to see addressed again in the climax. A character in it mentions something that I also wondered about as a reader. While this issue was discussed a little bit, I think it would have made more sense for it to come up again naturally later on. This is a minor criticism, but I would have easily bumped the rating up to five stars had it been mentioned at least one more time in the plot. I was otherwise thrilled with how everything was woven together.

The biggest reason why I chose such a high rating for this book was due to what happened in the last few pages. This section tied together all of the themes of the plot beautifully. I was especially moved by the imagery in the final scene, and I couldn’t have imagined a better way to end it. It was an excellent introduction to Mr. Botzenhart’s work. I’m excited to see what he’ll come up with next!

Clockwork Heart was fantastic. I’d heartily recommend it to fans of science fiction and romance alike.
