Top Ten Tuesday: Series I’ve Given Up On

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

Welcome to another Top Ten Tuesday!  This we’re talking about series we’ve given up on.  It is pretty rare that I completely give up on a series, especially if I’ve read several books.  I feel like I know the characters, and I want to know what happens to them.  I don’t have a full list of ten, but here are six series I’ve given up on permanently.

Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter Series by Laurell K. Hamilton-Not long after I discovered Interview with The Vampire, I was introduced to this series.  I really enjoyed it for a while, but I feel the plot strayed much to far away from the original premise and became increasingly ridiculous.  I was also very frustrated with many of the characters and their development.  Still, I was unwilling to give up on the series for a very long time hoping it would get better.  I made it to book sixteen before I gave up.

Merry Gentry Series by Laurell K. Hamilton-I lost my patience with this series much more quickly.  I only made it to book three.

Undead Series by Mary Janice Davidson-This series was  fun at the beginning!  I remember laughing out loud so much!  It was the perfect series if I was in the mood for something light and fluffy.  However, after a while this series ceased to be fun.  I persevered for a time but gave up after book ten.

Stephanie Plum Series by Janet Evanovich-I only read a few of these books.  I thought they were okay, but didn’t feel compelled to read any more.

World of the Lupi Series by Eileen Wilks-I liked this series, but it was never a favorite.  I stopped reading this series simply because I don’t have enough time and there are other series I like better.  I made it to book six.

Dead End Dating Series by Kimberly Raye-I started reading this series about the same time I was reading The Undead series.  It was fun and light, but there was a huge delay between books five and six.  By the time book six was released, it had been years since I’d read the previous book and I’d moved on.

Have you read or given up on any of these series?  Do you find it difficult to put a series aside permanently?  Which series have you given up on?

Comments

  1. Great list, I haven’t heard of most of these! It can be really difficult to give up on a series when you’ve already invested so much of your time in the world and the characters, but sometimes I think authors lose their way and series go on for so long that the stories don’t have the same heart in them anymore.

    • Poinsettia says

      Thanks!

Yes, it is so hard to give up on a series, but as you said, sometimes it just isn’t the same any more.

Thank you for visiting and commenting. 🙂

  2. I’ve heard about a few of these series, but certainly not all of them. It’s a bit annoying/sad when one lose interest in a series, especially if one has read quite a few of the books.

    • Poinsettia says

Yes, it certainly is sad to have to give up on a series. It is a kind of loss, especially if it is a series you used to enjoy.

      Thank you for visiting. 🙂

  3. I haven’t read any of these but… I’ve had a similar experience with other Janet Evanovich series. I think for me each book kind of… feels like the same book, over and over again?

    • Poinsettia says

I agree. I sort of had that feeling with the Stephanie Plum books I read I know a lot of people enjoy them, but they just weren’t for me.

      Thank you for stopping by!

  4. I have books in the Stephanie Plum Series but haven’t read any of them…
I think the problem with these series is that they’re too long. Whenever a series reach 5th book, I get hesitant reading them. 🙁

    • Poinsettia says

Series can be intimidating if they’ve reached a certain length before you’ve had a chance to read any of them. I’ve felt that way too.

However, there are some long series out there that are totally worth it!

      Thank you for visiting. 🙂

  5. Renee Lake says

I gave up on Anita and Sookie, but loved all the Merry Gentry books.

    • Poinsettia says

I’m glad you enjoyed the Merry Gentry books. They just weren’t for me. I still can’t think about the Anita Blake series without a twinge. I invested so much time in it. Saying goodbye was hard but necessary.

      Thanks so much for commenting!

  6. I haven’t read any of these but great list!

  7. I haven’t read any of these, but I’m sorry they didn’t work for you! I really hate it when I start a series and enjoy the first two books, but then the following books don’t seem to meet the same expectations.

    • Poinsettia says

I really hate having to let go of a series too, especially if I’ve been reading it for a long time. It makes the memories of the books I did enjoy feel bittersweet.

      Thanks for visiting! 🙂

      • I can understand that! It’s like the first few books will always have a special place on you shelves, but then… it’s time to move on.

        • Poinsettia says

Yes, unfortunately sometimes that is the case.

Thanks again for visiting. Stop by tomorrow for a new Top Ten Tuesday post!

  8. I quit Stephanie Plum after the 17th one, but after a few years read #18 and it confirmed why I had stopped in the first place. I loved her character and all the antics she got into, but I wanted to see her grow and not be forever stuck in the same place in life book after book after book.

    • Poinsettia says

Characters that don’t grow and change in a long series are frustrating. I’m also frustrated when characters begin to act in ways completely different from what they were before.

Thank you for visiting and commenting!

  9. I looked up Vampire Hunters. Twenty-six books! That’s a lot of books in a series! That seems like a bit much, unless it’s one of those monthly books that comes out like Sweet Valley High or whatever.

    • Poinsettia says

It is a very long series, and it isn’t a monthly book. She’s been writing the series for years now and the newest one is coming out this summer I believe.

It was hard for me to quit the series since I’d invested so much time in it, but I am glad I did. I haven’t had the desire to go back to it.

Thank you for visiting my post and commenting!

  10. I haven’t read any of these, but I do know there’s too many books to read to waste time on ones you’re not loving.

    • Poinsettia says

I agree! It has taken me a while to figure this out, but I’m learning.

      Thanks for commenting. 🙂

  11. I have neither read, nor given up on any of these series. I’ve heard of the Anita Blake series, and that the books get more steamy as they progress, and I could see how that might lend itself to diverging from the plot and becoming ridiculous.

Hope you have a great week.

    • Poinsettia says

Yes, the books became progressively steamy, which I was fine with until that became the sole focus of the books. They used to be about Anita’s job, her work with the police solving paranormal crimes. There were all sorts of paranormal creatures and suspense. Then something happened and suddenly all that was gone. I’ve heard that the books have since returned to their original focus, but I have no desire to go back to that series.

Thank you for visiting, and I hope you have a great week as well!

  12. I have not read any of these series, but man! I admire you being able to quit 16 books into a series.

    • Poinsettia says

It was very hard to quit! I had “known” those characters for years, but the series was not recognizable as the series I used to love so I had to put it aside. It is now up to 26 books!

Thanks so much for visiting my post! 🙂

  13. The only one of these I’ve read is the Stephanie Plum series. As someone said earlier, while the humor is great, the lack of character development got annoying, and I quit after about 12.

    • Poinsettia says

Yes, I got that feeling as well. I feel like with a series that long there should be some excellent character development. You made it further in to the series then I did!

      Thank you for stopping by!

  14. I’m not familiar with any of these, but maybe that’s a good thing, haha.

    • Poinsettia says

They weren’t all bad. I really enjoyed some of these series in the beginning. The World of the Lupi series is also good, it just wasn’t my favorite and I just decided I didn’t have time for it, but you might really enjoy it! 🙂

Thanks for stopping by and commenting. 🙂

  15. I’m with you on Stephanie Plum, but I do love Evanovich’s newer series Fox and O’Hare. It’s worth a go.

  16. I have not read most of these, though I did have a go at the Stephanie Plum series for a while. Never finished it, and not missing it so I guess it wasn’t all that great!

    • Poinsettia says

It wasn’t for me either. Fortunately I hadn’t invested as much time into that series as I have others.

      Thanks for visiting!

  17. I completely forgot about the Undead series! I enjoyed the first few books too. And, as you know, I feel the same about the Anita Blake series. I loved it in the beginning. I never did try her Merry Gentry series. I don’t like to give up on series, but with so many out there, it’s probably for the best now and then.

    • Poinsettia says

I don’t like giving up on series either, and it is always a hard decision when I do. However, sometimes it is necessary.

Thank you for visiting and commenting!

  18. I see so many people being disappointed by Anita Blake. I only read the first 3 books, so we’ll see when I give up on it (because I know I will, I just don’t know when exactly). I’m so sad to hear that about the Undead series. I loved the first book, and I’m super curious to see where Betsy goes from there, but I guess, like with Anita Blake, the risk of having an entire series dedicated to one small set of characters is that at some point, the plots get more and more ridiculous.

    • Poinsettia says

The Anita Blake books were good for a while. As I said, I made it to book 16, but I probably should have quit before then.

I enjoyed the Undead series up until around book six. So I would say those series are still worth reading up until a certain point.

Thanks so much for visiting. 🙂

  19. I’ve read quite a few first in a series books which haven’t grabbed me so I didn’t continue with them. I think I only read one or two from the Anita Blake series but didn’t continue with it. There are so many great books waiting to be read that I don’t feel bad when I don’t feel the urge to continue with a series.

    • Poinsettia says

My problem was a I really enjoyed some of these series at the beginning, so it was sad when I wasn’t enjoying them any more, and it was difficult to put them aside because I used to like them so much.

      Thank you for commenting! 🙂

  20. Great list! A few of these series are on my TBR, but less in the way of “I’m sure I’ll love this and devour each book” and more in the way of “eh, I’ll try book 1 and see how it goes”, lol!

    • Poinsettia says

Yeah, I have a few series on my tbr that I feel that way about.

As I said, Undead was a lot of fun for a while, and I only stopped reading World of the Lupi because while it was good, it just wasn’t a favorite and I got behind and don’t have the motivation to get caught up. But you might really love it! I hope some of these work out for you.

      Thanks for visiting. 🙂

  21. Wow I don’t think I’ve heard of any of these! Sorry that most of them have seemed to get boring or dull enough to not want to continue. I feel like that is one of the worst things when it comes to reading because of all the potential the story could have had. Great list! And of course, thank you for stopping by my post.

    • Poinsettia says

I wouldn’t say most of them bored me so much as they morphed into something I didn’t recognize. I mean I’m all for characters and plots growing and changing, but several of these went in really bad directions. At least in my opinion.

Though I will say that they only reason I stopped reading the World of the Lupi series is because of time and not because it isn’t good. It is, it just wasn’t a favorite and I’ve found I need to prioritize my reading if I’m really going to enjoy it. However, it might be perfect for someone else!

Thank you so much for visiting and commenting! 🙂

  22. It has to be so frustraing to reach book 16 and see that what the series has become is something you don’t like. 🙁

    • Poinsettia says

It was frustrating and incredibly sad! I really probably should have stopped several books before I did, but I was very reluctant to give the series up. I had invested so much time in it and I kept clinging to the hope it would get better.

Thank you so much for stopping by and commenting. 🙂

  23. I haven’t read any of these yet, but I am trying to let go of series more easily. If it’s not working, it’s not working and it’s just a waste of time to continue reading in that case 🙂

    • Poinsettia says

It would be easier if it were a series I didn’t like from the beginning, but I used to really enjoy several of these, which made it so difficult to let go.

But yes, I am also working on learning when to move to other books I will hopefully enjoy more. Thanks for commenting. Stop in tomorrow for a new Top Ten Tuesday post! 🙂

  24. I’ve never read the Stephanie Plum books, but do think the film is hilarious! Silly, but funny. 😉

Thanks so much for the Finding Wonderland visit! Apologies for the delay in returning the favor. 🙂

  25. I quit the Davidson one. Grrrr on it. I don’t currently read the Plum or Hamilton ones but I’ll read them eventually again I’m sure.

    • Poinsettia says

I know how you feel about the Undead series. I’ve heard the Anita Blakes series is better now, but at this point I’ve lost interest.

      Thanks for commenting. 🙂
