Welcome to Thursday Thoughts. A place for you to read what I’m thinking about and add your own thoughts into the mix (please comment… I hate to hang out here alone!).
Today, I’m thinking about kitchen gadgets.
I love to cook; it’s one of my favorite past times, to be honest. Finding new recipes to feed the one remaining kid I have at home is a weekly challenge that I eagerly accept. I’m also prone to falling into the trap of wanting–and sometimes buying–cutesy kitchen gadgets. My favorite one, however, is one that was given to me: a vampire garlic crusher. It’s ridiculous, but I love it and use it whenever I need to mash up a clove or two. And considering I have Romanian garlic growing in my yard right now, this summer ought to be fun.
When I stumbled across this fun quiz, I knew I had to take it.
Ever wonder what clever kitchen gadget you are? Now you can find out, here.
My result didn’t surprise me much and it did make me laugh, so that’s a bonus.
I mean, I do love me some pizza.
What about you? Do you have any fun or silly kitchen gadgets you love? Take the quiz in the link above and let us know your results in the comments. I’m excited to see what other crazy things are out there to potentially add to my kitchen.
Nice post. I love to cook too, and I unfortunately have lots of silly kitchen gadgets. Not all people think they might be silly…like the apple peeler I had to have that works wonderfully. Except the apple or potato is so difficult to get on, I have cut myself twice. Or the can tab utensil I had to have. You slip it under the tab on the can and it lifts it up instead of breaking your fingernails except…it was so thick you couldn’t get it between a rock and a hard place. It sure didn’t look like that online 🙂
What a wonderful subject your thoughts drifted to today!
Oh man, the expectation vs. reality! Sometimes things are much better in theory than in practical use. Thank you! I thought it was fun.
Such a fun post. I love kitchen gadgets but not necessarily the “cutesy” ones….I like the old standards and love all the new gadgets that have come out… for instance, I love my sous-vide for steaks, even though I don’t use it very often. So many choices in the quiz that I took it twice but got the same answer each time….so I guess it’s true: I got: 3-in-1 Potato Peeler
Thank you! I have one of those as well and I love it. I need to dig it back out and play with it some more though. Funny story: when I set up my Joule (the brand of sous vide I have), I had to name it. I was like… why? But, in the end, she became Trish.
We got my MiL a pirate wine bottle opener for Christmas — which, weirdly, doesn’t seem to available anymore or I’d link to it — but I do love the dracula garlic crusher. Seems like a terrible fate to inflict on a poor vampire, though….
OMG, my FIL would LOVE that! That was my husband’s sense of humor, for sure. He knew how much I loved my vamps. I do agree, tough way to die. Hah!
Apparently I am a pizza cutter shaped like a bicycle! Lol.
I try to avoid kitchen gadgets with one specific use. Prime example would be the pasta maker with the crank handle on the side. I used it about five times and it’s been in my cabinet the rest of the 20+ years.
That said, a single-use Item I’d like to buy is a meat grinder you turn by hand. Not for meat, but for raisins- to make my grandmother’s raisin-fill cookies.
Hah, twinsies! 😀
That was always Alton Brown’s thing, too. Everything in his kitchen must do double duty. There was one thing he gave an exception for, but it’s been so many years, I can’t remember what it was.
Oh, that’s interesting. Hoping you can find one so that you can make the cookies.
That’s actually really cute! I also see a lot of tea bag holders that are so adorable. Yes, I love a good plate of pizza.
Yes! There’s a Loch Ness Monster tea steeper that I want. She’s so cute!
Many years ago I worked at a store that sold a machine that would perfect portion out cookie dough for you into little round balls.
The problem was, the machine had a lot of nooks and crannies and looked like it would be really hard to clean. As in, you’d have to take it apart and really scrub it.
I totally understand why someone who had arthritis or some other medical condition that makes moving their fingers difficult might find this helpful, but then I wondered how someone who struggled to move their fingers could be expected to clean that device afterwards.
It seemed to be a far more complicated machine than it should have been….but it did always make me crave freshly baked cookies. 😄
Yes! Sadly, you run into that all the time. You pick up something you think will be helpful and it turns out to be more difficult to clean or use than is worth it.
Apparently I’m a Flat-Fold whisk. Really? As for your Dracula Garlic press, normally I don’t like garlic presses –yes, they, or rather, some squish the garlic well enough (others squish garlic out the sides, what a mess) but then try to clean them! What a chore. But since Vampires fear garlic, maybe I will give it a try.
Well, that’s interesting! My vampire isn’t really a press, it crushes the garlic between these little spikes (which is funny in its own right). It cleans pretty easily – I use a fork to get the big pieces out and run it under water for the rest.
