The Hunter’s Inn

In Shannon’s Law, the village of Fleetworth-Green is an echo of ye olde England. It is deliberately preserved with a flavor of days gone by. The Earl of Bloxington ensures that it remains part of that heritage to which the aristocracy belong. Village pubs still exist in England. However, modern profit-conscious corporate owners are reluctant to let a few old codgers sit playing dominoes and stroking their gray muzzled dogs dogs over a pint. Even the most traditional of pubs are likely to have a wide-screen to receive satellite football TV.  Strict drink-driving rules have meant that fewer townies venture out for a drink in a country pub. Even so, the village pub remains a vibrant and colorful part of English life.

In Shannon’s Law the local pub is “The Hunter’s Inn”. The choice of name was easy since it’s my own local pub. As a cyclist I often ride out into the countryside on the tandem and have a drink. There is nothing more alarming than descending hills at speed when my pilot has knocked back a few pints of strong ale. Nearly all pubs offer food and often it is excellent. On one occasion we stopped at  a village pub and asked for a prawn salad with some bread. . The barman shook his head and said “No” in a very yokel accent. We studied the menu board and saw that prawn sandwich  was available. We asked for two.  The barman nodded. “You want salad with that?” he asked. Only in deepest rural England are such things normal. At a Norfolk pub I once asked for a jacket potato. The girl shook her head. “There be no spuds,” she said. There was a large farm shop next door. I asked if they could get some potatoes there. “Them there bain’t the right spuds for uzz,” she said. The village pub is not always slick and corporate. Long may they live.

In the book, the pub represents a meeting place for all members of society. In modern Britain I feel that differentials of wealth, opportunity, race and belief mean that in reality few such natural forums exist. Even though I am resolutely an inner city working class  girl, I created the local pub as a kind of ideal social universe. A few miles from my home in England is my favorite one. The staff and the food are first class.

She took a walk through the bar. She was delighted to see the Reverend Hoverington, pint mug in hand. He planted a loose wet kiss on her cheek.

“Splendid news my holy child! Wonderful tradition. The Royal succession goes on. Bloody God, Jesus, State and Crown……what a dream team.”

Several good citizens raised their glasses and cheered.

MEDIA KIT Shannon's Law smallerWild child inner city cop Shannon Aguerri walks a dangerous line between her methods and justice. When the bosses lose their nerve, after yet another maverick mission, she is transferred to green pastures to play out the role of a routine village cop. When she encounters signs of people and drug trafficking she homes in on serious millionaire criminals. As a loner she has attracted men but nothing has stuck. When she meets Spencer, the hunky and widowed Earl of Bloxington, there is an immediate rapport between them. Their social differences mean nothing to their passion and need. Already in the mix is an upper class female rival – who has long plotted her way into the Earl’s bed. The jealousy is an evil shade of green and the anger is a violent scarlet. Often inhibited by a sense of duty and honour, Spencer is slow to reveal his feelings. When Shannon confronts him with the need to choose between her word and that of her rival, he does not immediately support her. All the same, when they are forced together to carry out a desperate rescue mission, their love is stronger than everything ranged against them.

Author’s note: This book is quite ‘strongly flavoured’ and features uninhibited, but straightforward steamy sexual scenes between consenting adults and true-to-life street language that would occur in high-stress situations.
