Ah, summertime. And the beach. And a good book. Every woman’s dream, right? Not mine. When I was about twelve I had a heat stroke and such a bad sunburn that I remember being in bed for three or four days. Ever since then, being in the sun makes me woozy and uncomfortable. And I still burn easily. No tanning for me.

I spent last weekend in East Texas, much of the time reading by a really small lake, at a picnic table under an arbor covered by wisteria vines. I’d read, watch the grandchildren play in the water, then read some more. It was warm—probably upper 80s—but there was a delightful breeze. Now that’s summertime to me.

I once wrote a young-adult novel titled A Year with No Summer because the young girl who was the chief character had to work in her mom’s boardinghouse (a la 1920s or so in East Texas) rather than getting the summer vacation most kids enjoy. The publisher changed the title to After Pa Was Shot, and my mother, then elderly, snorted, “More violence!”

Summer is a time out for children and adults, a time to kick back and, yeah, read a lot of books. Enjoy your summer and, hey, maybe try a Kelly O’Connell Mystery. The fifth, Deception in Strange Places, launches July 31—right in the middle of summer.
