South Padre Island – Hidden Beach Getaway
South Padre Island is a resort town in Cameron County, Texas It is part of the Brownsville–Harlingen Metropolitan Statistical Area. The permanent population was 2,816 at the 2010 census. The town is located on South Padre Island, a barrier island along the Texas Gulf Coast accessible via a causeway from the town of Port Isabel. South Padre Island is named after José Nicolás Ballí (Padre Ballí), a Catholic priest and settler.

Back in the day, when migratory birds and sea turtles had the island to themselves, Padre Jose Nicholas Ballí brought the first permanent settlers while establishing a church and attempting to bring Christianity to the native Karankawa Indians. The Island had been granted to his grandfather, Nicolás Ballí in 1759, by King Carlos III of Spain.

The southernmost part of Padre Island on the Gulf of Mexico has the most pristine beaches in Texas and a tropical climate with temperatures that seldom dip below the 70’s even in the winter.

South Padre Island is home to many watersport activities with personal water craft rental, kiteboarding and dolphin watches being the most popular. Other favorites are horseback riding adventures on the beach and ecological tours that explore Padre Island National Seashore. Fishing is also popular. The Texas International Fishing Tournament has winnings worth a quarter million dollars.

Each winter thousands of retired folks and vacationers travel to South Padre to spend the winter. These winter visitors are known colloquially by the term: “snowbirds.”

If you love warm weather and the beach, this little known corner of the Gulf of Mexico, offers miles and miles of pristine beaches, a diversity of wild life, and a laid-back atmosphere.
