Halloween Blogfest: Cate Masters

Living with ghosts

Ghost walks are such fun! I’ve been on a few, in New York City and in Gettysburg, and the blend of history and spookiness makes for an unusual night. Even better if a spirit makes an appearance!

So far, the closest encounter I’ve had is with orbs. Plenty showed up in photographs along the Gettysburg walk. But a few loved ones who’ve passed on have returned in dreams, both for me and for my family. I always love to see them. It’s like being able to visit for awhile, though I miss them even more afterward.

My daughter’s boyfriend, Justin Jones (not his real name) had one of the most unusual dreams I’ve ever heard. While my daughter was helping Justin renovate the house he’d bought, built by his great grandfather James, sometimes cabinet doors would open by themselves, and they’d hear noises in the other room. It always gave my daughter the chills.

One night, Justin dreamt an old man sat on his bed and awakened him to ask, “Who are you?” Justin gave his name, and asked, “Who are you?” The old man said, “James Jones.” Justin’s great grandfather!

James asked, “What are you doing here?” and Justin replied, “I live here.” His great grandfather nodded, and said, “I’ll tell her to leave you alone then.”

When Justin told his parents about the dream, they revealed that James had had a younger sister who died as a girl. True to James’ word, no more cabinet doors opened, no more sounds from the next room. Now that gave me the chills when I heard it! I bet James and his younger sister are still there, though. Just more accepting of the new tenant. 🙂

Have you ever lived with a ghost? Or dreamed of a loved one who’d passed on?

  1. I love that story. I’m so glad it worked out for everyone too.

You already know about me. I’m a walking ghost whisperer. LOL.

  2. Actually since I submitted this post, my daughter has heard the little girl again. Apparently she can’t resist other kids! When my daughter brought my grandson for a visit, giggling and running footsteps sounded from inside. The poor little thing just wants to play!

  3. That’s a creepy dream, but with a good ending.
I dreamed about my grandfather after he died. He and my dog (who had also just died) were together and in a very peaceful place.

  4. Nice to think that dogs go to heaven too, Alex. 🙂

  5. We lived in a house that the previous family never left. People would see a little girl standing on the landing to the steps, and we would see silhouettes in the windows if we were outside. We heard noises and doors would slam frequently. It was creepy!

  6. Yikes that would be creepy Erin! My youngest daughter claims our old house was haunted but I never saw or felt anything. But then I never do, lol

  7. No, I haven’t

  8. There was a ghost of an old man living in a trailer (mobile home) my first husband and I rented in Tacoma WA. We’d see his shadow on the living room wall, sometimes he’d open cupboards in the kitchen, the shower would come on at odd times. Most distressing was early mornings when he’d sit on the bed after my husband left for work early in the mornings.

Not a malicious spirit, but not lonely either. When we moved out, we kinda missed him.

    ……dhole

  9. Wow! I’ve always been fascinated by ghost stories. I’ve had a few encounters myself and caught orbs in pictures.

Justin’s story is just about the freakiest I’ve ever heard!

I’ve read several One Night Stands and would love to read Cinderella Dreams. Everyone deserves a second chance.

  10. That ghost story gave me chills… I’m glad James didn’t visit me!

Ah, Cinderella. Every girl dreams of that happy ending. I’m currently working on a Cinderella story with a historical twist.

Cinderella Dreams sounds like a great read for a cold fall day.

    • James is harmless, I think, Haley. He actually built the house, so it’s natural for him to question who’s living there, lol.

Yes, Cinderella Dreams will warm your heart. And it goes back in time a little, to the 80s.

  11. Thanks to everyone who commented! Hope you had a wonderful Halloween.
