When dealing with the devil, it’s easy to be burned…especially when passion ignites the flames.

Who can find a virtuous woman… Beautiful, respectable, and dutiful, Lady Diana Palmerston-Wriothesley, has long resigned herself to her twelve-year loveless and childless marriage to a feckless husband…until his gambling pushes them to the brink of financial ruin.

Sometimes the devil is in disguise…as a gentleman… Viscount Ludovic, “The Devil DeVere,” is a man accustomed to taking what he wants, according to his whim and heedless of the cost…until he encounters a woman who won’t be had at any price.

When dealing with the devil, it’s easy to be burned… When Diana discovers a secret that shatters the carefully built façade concealing her private pain, she seeks aid and comfort from the most unlikely place…the devil’s arms. But will a single night of heavenly passion damn them both forever?

What’s that age old saying? Better the Devil you know then the Devil you don’t?

This book is number three in the Devil DeVere series but actually takes place four years before book one. The Devil You Know opens 15 years before the events of book one and two and shows the hero in the tale, Viscount Ludovic DeVere being cast aside for a peer of the ton with a higher ranking by the woman he intended to marry. We soon learn that this event shapes Vic into the Devil we know.

Barroness Diana has come to see a horse race with her husband and family. We quickly learn that Diana is in not only a loveless marriage, but one filled with lies and secrets. When she finds out that her husband has left them in dire straits, she must make a deal with the Devil himself.

From the first meeting between Vic and Diana, their chemistry sets the page on fire. Her response says it all; “Without having uttered a word beyond her name, the portentous weight of an indecent proposition hung between them.” The interchange between the two is delightful while he struggles with disposing of an unwanted guest and she struggles with her desires and how they affect her vows.

While Vic makes his desire known, Diana is determined to remain faithful to her marriage all the while fighting her curiosity for this devilish man. She over hears two rather interesting conversations which lead her down a path she never expected to go, and is far more sensual and erotic then she ever imagined.

This book was an interesting read for me. We learn a little bit about what makes the devil the way he is, and we see the passion that is hinted in the previous book. Edward, from the previous books, and he now dead wife are supportive players while Vic and Diana’s husband play the villains. I really enjoyed the banter between the two protagonists, and the gossiping between the women. However, this book does not have a happy ending or even a happy for now ending, it is essentially part one of a two parts within the series itself.

In all, Ms. Vane has written another gem that has left readers, and myself, wagging our tongues waiting for the conclusion to the epic love story that is Vic and Diana in The Devil’s Match. In that, I have no doubt.
