Alexis Joplin, popular host of the travel show, Overnight Stays, is embarking on her final scouting expedition with her partner and best friend, Shane Fowler. Over the course of the last two years, the duo has grown closer not only at work, but outside of the job. While their friends and co-workers may whisper that something more than friendship is the source of their mutual admiration, they deny it even as their personal feelings are reaching a critical apex.

Shrouded in the dark beauty of a hundred year old inn, while lightning flashes and thunder rumbles, neither Alexis nor Shane can hold on to the pretense any longer. They give in to one night of passion with the promise that in the morning, they’ll awake as friends.

Can straight men and women maintain long-term friendships without developing romantic feelings for one another? Does the answer to this question change once sex enters the equation? Alexis and Shane are about to test the limits of their friendship and find out the truth about mixing friendship and attraction once and for all.

The strong chemistry between Alexis and Shane is what makes this story so much fun to read. Their inside jokes and faux-flirty banter make their friendship come alive. Neither one of them is perfect by any means, but they have long since learned how to bring out the best in one another. Seeing how they’ve learned to adjust to one another’s idiosyncrasies was by far my favorite part of reading this book.

Repeated typos and grammar and spelling errors lead me to give this novella a lower rating than it would have otherwise received. While it was easy to figure out what author intended to say most of the time, the actual meanings of a few sentences remain a mystery to me.

The beautiful setting and well-paced plot kept me interested in what was happening to these characters. There’s something romantic about staying in a cozy bed and breakfast over a stormy weekend, and the descriptions of what was happening to the land and sky fits into Shane and Alexis’ story quite well.

One Stormy Night is an enjoyable tale that is a good choice for anyone in the mood for something playful and lighthearted. It can easily be read in one sitting.
