To be honest, I didn’t like Melody at first. Several of the character traits she despises in other people are ones that she is just as guilty of. Not every protagonist has to be instantly likeable in order to tell a good story, though, and once I got to know her better I appreciated the fact that she was written so realistically. It was especially interesting to see the strengths in her personality slowly reveal themselves as the plot progresses.

I had a hard time understanding the relationship between Melody and Sutton. They share little in common and seem to have personalities that are about as different from one another as two people can get. It was also difficult to figure out why either one of them would risk their reputations under these circumstances. Melody especially would have a lot to lose in the time and place in which she lives if she becomes known as a loose woman.

The crisply detailed settings of this short story was a pleasure to read. Reading this tale at the end of a long, cold winter was a good choice for me due to the inclusion of a scene that happens at the same time of year. The author captures the damp, cold transition between winter and spring well. I could easily visualize the grey skies and muddy roads that Melody knows so well during that time of year.

It would have also been helpful had more time been spent on describing exactly how Melody’s abilities work. They seem to continue developing as she grows older, but I never quite understood what she can and cannot do with them. Discussing the topic in greater detail would have lead to a higher rating for this book.

I was also intrigued by all of the references to food in this tale. While this isn’t necessarily a topic I expected to see broached in an erotic short story, Ms. Lovely ties it all in quite well. Knowing what Melody and her neighbours crave helped me to understand their world better and kept me interested in what happens to them next.

Into the Fire is full of surprises. This is a good choice for anyone in the mood for something a little out of the ordinary.
