Maggie’s just decided she’s been stood up when she bumps into hard-bodied guitarist Calvin—literally. Once the shock of their abrupt meeting wears off, Calvin asks Maggie out for a drink and she figures, why not? She’s all dressed up for a date…just not this one.She enjoys his company, even if he’s only twenty-seven and she’s forty…something. And while witty conversation’s all good, they’re just as compatible in bed. One drink turns into multiple romps between the sheets. He’s old enough to know how to make love to a woman and young enough to look damn fine doing it…and doing it. He even manages to convince Maggie she’s still pretty hot herself. Now if he would just stop serenading her with that infernal Rod Stewart song.

Online dating can royally bite. Just ask Maggie Randolph-Mae. It all started when her date failed to appear at the designated restaurant. Then, when an accidental collision with a musician ruins her dress, Maggie writes the night off as a complete and total loss. What she doesn’t realize is, that her evening from hell is about to become the best beginning she’s ever known.

While I’ve always been on the fence when it comes to older woman/younger man stories, Waking Maggie was a total win for me. Maggie is a beautiful, confident forty-something, and although a bit lonely, she tries her best to not let it get her down. She’s very personable and likable, once she gets past her anger early on in the story. I love how she takes control of the situation and makes it work, even when it doesn’t seem like it’s going to. Probably the best part about Maggie, is her hidden sexual secret. While not dark and dirty, it is very amusing and a fun little quirk to her character. Calvin’s a guitarist willing to take on a challenge. He’s determined to make things right with Maggie after their accidental run in at the restaurant and winds up in deeper than he expected. His devotion and honesty with her so soon after their meeting is endearing as well as attractive. Who doesn’t love an honest and patient man? For Maggie, he’s a breath of fresh air, so much different from the jerky men she’s used to. I love his go-with-the-flow attitude and how Maggie’s age never once enters into the equation for him. He’s not dismissive of her because she’s older nor is he seeking her out for that reason alone, either. He’s content to find the woman before him, and takes her as she is, and that’s refreshing.

Waking Maggie is a fun and sexy reminiscence of the couple’s first meeting, relived on the morning of their anniversary. It’s a lesson in patience, understanding, and love at first touch. I appreciate the way the author worked Maggie’s fears and insecurities into the story without making her seem weak or dependent, but still allowing that vulnerability to show, too. It’s a fine balance. I also enjoyed the fact that it wasn’t all roses and rainbows for them that first night, either. Their disagreements throughout the night are more reflective of the real world, giving you a more satisfying feeling when they find a way to work it out in the end. It’s apparent that Maggie and Calvin were made for one another and are loving every minute of their new life together.
