Or is she? Bettina is his soulmate, to be sure, but otherwise she’s not what she seems. Her reasons for avoiding Sev are complicated. Mates don’t hide things from one another, and there is a lot Bettina is hiding. For one thing, she’s not lowborn. Raised in the lap of luxury, she decided to run rather than embrace a power that threatens her mind and heart.

This is the first in the Planet Kielan series by Brenna Lyons and its one not to be missed.

When Ms. Lyons writes a fantasy story, she knows what she’s doing. I felt transported immediately to a whole new world with characters I wanted to know more about. Her heroines are tortured and strong while her heroes are yummy delights.

I liked Bettina from the beginning. She’s got a lot of things going on in her past that she doesn’t really want to deal with. I found that interesting and something I could relate to. We all have something we don’t really want others to know about and the way Bettina deals with it is realistic. As a hero, Sev is wonderful. He has an idea of Bettina’s precog state, but he’s also not willing to push her to deal with it. I liked that he relentlessly pursued her. When he wanted something, nothing and no one—even his irritating mother—held him back.

If I had any issues with this story, I wanted to see more passion develop between Bettina and Sev. It seemed like the coupling happened fast, and though I realize this is a short story, I wanted to see more sensuality between them. What helped for me was the mindlinks between them. At times, the links they shared were sexier than actual intercourse because they trusted each other.

What I found touching was Ms. Lyons’ descriptions of Bettina’s mother and her issues. What could’ve been written very heavy-handed was dealt with in a suave manner that explained without making her mother look foolish. Kudos.

If you want a story that has more going on than meets the eye, then you need to read Time Currents. I give this one 4 cherries.
