Gina was sure that her husband’s assistant had to be some pretty, young thing with a flat stomach and perky breasts. Whether it was the job or his assistant, he showed no interest in her anymore. They had not had sex since his career advancement six months ago.

When he suddenly appeared behind her, staring at her damp breasts in the steamy bathroom mirror, she recognized the lust in his eyes. “Are you hard for me or someone else?” she snipped.

No words left his lips, only a low masculine grunt. Before she could react, he spun her around, closed and locked the door, and lowered his jeans.

She knew at that moment that she had no choice in what was about to happen. Relentlessly he began Staking Claim to what was his.

First, I must say, this is a super short story, but that doesn’t take away from the sensuality of it. Ms. Pierce writes a love between a man and wife that is as beautiful as it is primal. It’s nice to see a couple who have the spark, the need for each other even through the rough times.

My issue with this story? It’s too short! As the reader, you get involved in Gina and Rick’s lives, but you don’t get the whole picture. Sometimes it’s the details that aren’t mentioned that make the story stronger. There is a definite conflict between the characters—a lack of communication. Many couples experience a lack of communication at one time or another and the reader can relate to this. What bothered me was Gina’s overactive imagination (not that we don’t all let our minds wander when faced with a troublesome situation; again the reader can relate). I felt that she gave up a bit easily. That being said, the ending is totally worth the read.

If you want a short but red-hot story for a chilly night, then you need to read Staking Claim. I give this story 3.5 cherries.
