The novella opens with Alexis Marshall sitting in the restaurant waiting for her husband Garrett to come, it’s their tenth anniversary and apparently he’s forgotten. Alexis is saddened by this and decides to leave, but going home is not an option. Alexis knows deep in her heart that her marriage to Garrett has hit a wall; they just can’t seem to connect anymore. They no longer talk and he always seem preoccupied which leaves her feeling empty and numb.
Garrett Marshall just wrapped up the case that had kept him working day and night, being a cop meant that sometimes the case you were involved in controlled your life. He thought about the distance that seemed to have developed between him and Alexis, and now that the case was over he could concentrate on her, but is it too late?
The voice of reason comes from her friend Melissa who tells her that she should hold on even if she thinks there’s nothing to hold on to. Alexis decided to fight for her marriage, and the things she did to make Garrett remember their love was sweet.
This reader got to see the vulnerable side of Garrett, and the determination of Alexis, a woman who loved her husband and wanted her marriage. I became involved in their love story which made me care about them, knowing that somehow they would find their way back to each other. Sexy Little Surprises was an enjoyable story and even though the story was short, it was well written and the characters fully developed.
