I love Halloween. It’s the time of year when scary movies begin to pop up all over the television.
During this season, I always look for the old Hammer horror films, the ones starring Vincent Price that are based on Edgar Allen Poe stories like The Pit and the Pendulum, The Raven, The House of Usher. These were the films I would watch on a Saturday afternoon that scared the crap out of me as a kid.
Today’s torture porn like the Saw films can’t hold a candle to these oldies but goodies.Cutting off appendages in unusually cruel fashion is not scary. It’s icky.
From those classics I graduated to movies like Alien, Halloween, The Thing, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street and Reanimator. George Romero’s Dead series is a particular favorite and, for years, I watched Dawn of the Dead every Friday and Saturday night at midnight when I worked at a movie theater.
Today, I still enjoy a good fright. Paranormal Activity was a highlight in recent years and I love The Walking Dead on AMC.
Bring on Ridley Scott’s Prometheus next year.
