Playing With Fyre is a contemporary fairy tale in which all the pieces fall into place, especially if you are willing to suspend belief.
Raelyn Born is a small town woman who owns a massage and aromatherapy business in the gatehouse of an estate that Logan Fyre, a high-power lawyer dabbling in property development wants to turn into an upscale resort. Rae’s business is new and struggling and she’s having trouble keeping up with her mortgage. She overextended herself to buy the gatehouse, which she has loved since she was a little girl.
Fyre’s firm has been sending threatening letters to Rae and even went so far as to buy the bank that holds the note on her home in an attempt to get her to sell the gatehouse. Each one has to roll with the numerous curve balls the other throws and neither backs down as they ratchet up the stakes. There is enough lovin’ to keep you warm on a cool autumn night.
While Rae and Logan are likable enough, neither one is particularly compelling. A number of editing issues, such as missing words, pulled me out of the story more than once. And the symmetry of the story is slightly too pat. Despite that, it is easy to get swept up in the story and root for Raelyn and Logan to end up together. Though the writing could use some work, I give Playing With Fire 3.5 cherries for being a fun romp.
