Logan, failed singer and recovering meth addict, is given the chance of a lifetime when a friend offers her the lead spot in his established rock band. But things get complicated when she starts hallucinating human-ish creatures with black eyes who disappear through walls. So when the gorgeous, mysterious Jaeryth falls into her life, claiming he can see the creatures too, she can’t help but feel a bond with him.
Jaeryth is a demon who’s long been obsessed with Logan—so much that he’s been ignoring his demonic duties. As punishment, he’s been made human and charged with corrupting Logan, who harbors a power she’s unaware of that could be used for great good…or evil. And if Jaeryth can’t corrupt her, he has to kill her.
If he doesn’t complete his mission, he’ll spend eternity being tortured. Unfortunately, he’s falling in love with the woman he’s supposed to destroy.
When the book began, it felt like there were two, very different stories that barely belong to be in the same book. First, there was Logan’s story. She’s a recovering drug addict who is trying to get her life back on track despite the obstacles her life has thrown at her. Just when she starts to feel like a feeling of normal is possible, she begins to hallucinate of human beings with black eyes who could move through walls. In that sense, her story was very realistic and contemporary. I loved Logan as a character and throughout the whole book wanted to see her succeed.
Then there was Jaeryth’s story. He is a demon in charge of smaller demons known as Tempters. Those Tempters have to temp people into committing sin. We got to see his paranormal world and the different levels that human’s don’t know about. At first, I didn’t really care for him and when I would get to one of his scenes, I would just want to hurry up and return to Logan’s story. It felt like those were two very different books that would never come together.
When both stories intertwined, that was when the magic happened. The attraction between Logan and Jaeryth was instant but they both hid it and denied it. They became friends, but the feelings grew into so much more. I started to care for Jaeryth as the layers of his character came together. We got to see the good in the demon and learn that he could fall in love and make the biggest sacrifice of his life.
The thing I loved the most about this book was that Jaeryth had weaknesses. Many books with a paranormal hero depict the man as invincible, but not in this case. He could bleed, and get hurt, and get tired, and he needed to really concentrate to see other demons.
By the time the book was coming to an end, I didn’t want to say goodbye to these characters. This was a very enjoyable read and I know I will be checking out more work from this author. If you love a good angels and demons story, you have to read this!!!
