On Christmas Eve, a knock on the door heralds the arrival of a homeless man in ragged clothes who bears a staggering resemblance to her husband. However, he doesn’t know who he is, or what has led him to the cottage. Recklessly, she lets him stay the night, but begins to suspect she may have made a terrible mistake when, in the midst of unexpected passion, a wolf flees howling from her bed.

Ruth goes to the cabin where they spent happy times together, with the intent of ending it all. But a ragged, homeless man who bears a striking resemblance to Jared stumbles up to the door, and Ruth lets him in to warm himself. The holiday weaves a bit of enchantment, and Ruth decides to pretend this stranger is Jared, and give herself one last night of love, before ending her life. I love the way Ruth starts off as an unhappy and lonely woman, and yet still wants to experience the love of her husband one last time in the arms of what she believes is a stranger who resembles her beloved Jared. I truly felt for her as she believes all is lost and all she has left is one night with a memory.
And Jared is the classic confused and lonely man without a memory until the love of his woman breaks through the walls in this mind. He was truly tortured and I loved watching him find himself again.
Marie Treanor has created such a wonderful, timeless love story, filled with love and hope and new beginnings. And a little hot sex doesn’t hurt on a cold winter night either. This one is a passionate tearjerker, and I loved every single word. This is one I will read every year at holiday time, as it touched me deeply in many ways.
