Review by BittersweetAyda Rogers can’t believe her luck, she’s been invited to a Scottish castle for the summer to research her Doctoral thesis. When she gets there she finds with 800 years of history to contend with, the past is always present. Steamy tales of previous castle owners meld within the modern story as she learns all she needs for her paper. And sometimes its not the past but the present which makes you change your whole way of thinking, especially when it comes in the form of the future Duke named Hunter.
What is it about Scottish men that attract us so much? “History Lessons” made me raise the question, and not for the first time.
Ms. Mueller doesn’t have the definitive answer, but her novel certainly helps reveal a glimpse to the answer.
First, we meet Hunter. A captivating man with deep blue eyes, thick brown hair streaked with blond, a solid lean build and a sexy smile and accent to boot. Later, we encounter several ancestors which diligently demonstrate where Hunter gets his looks. Together, the huge Sinclair family creates a whirlwind of intense activity. The novel wouldn’t be complete without the presence of Ayda. A woman, which like many others nowadays has to choose between love and her career. She is the one that gives the novel a point of reality.
Ms. Mueller masterfully interweaves history with the contemporary world, creating a mix that easily drew me into the story. She builds strong snippets of historic stories that left me craving for more knowledge about those characters.
However, so many characters with hard to pronounce names were a little overwhelming sometimes. Also, it would have been nice to have a little more focus on Hunter and Ayda. The termination of their story is, in my point of view, a little abrupt.
“History Lessons” is a sweet and beautiful tale filled with moments worth remembering.
