Skye Adams is looking forward to a wonderful lunch with her father – Victor Adams – to celebrate her birthday after he returns from a work trip. Instead of a good meal of Thai food, however, Skye ends up on the run for her life. Black-clad strangers try to kill her, her father’s partner Garth and decimate the restaurant to smoking rubble. Scared out of her mind, Skye turns to the only person she feels she can trust, Jack Berick, a rugged, mysterious man whom her father once insisted she believe in were all hell ever to suddenly break loose.
Piecing together a complicated web of lies, half truths and deceit, Skye and Jack must work out not only whom to trust, but figure out what happened to Victor and how to get him back – preferably whole and sound. The further they dig, the more convoluted everything becomes and Skye finally understands the world is not full of black and white, good and evil, but a messy mixture of grey.
In amongst the fear, fire and insanity, more and more Skye realized the searing attraction burning between herself and Jack is the only solid, reliable thing she can depend on. Losing her heart had not been part of the plan, but all too soon the intensity smouldering between them has raged way out of control, and Skye can only see one man dependable enough to remain by her side into the future no matter what might happen. That man is Jack, as they both tempt fate and flirt with danger.
How would you react if you found out your father had a deep super surprising secret life? Skye Adams learned that very thing when she was twenty-two years old. Despite assuming her father was paranoid and overly dramatic, they retained a close relationship until the day he disappears. The next 24 hours are a whirlwind for young Skye.
Ms. Lapthorne writes a very good action story. There are spies, guns, explosions and chase scenes. I was never sure what would be lurking around the next corner. While the action was good, there wasn’t much suspense involved. Since this is the first book of a series, I’m assuming the next title may contain more of the mystery aspect.
What felt lacking a bit in this story was the romance. After her father, Victor, is abducted, Skye isn’t sure who to trust or where to turn until she remembers to call Jack Berwick, a private investigator Victor trusts. Skye and Jack make an instant connection, but it did feel a bit rushed. I didn’t get to know Jack very well, and never did learn what it was about him that made Victor trust him. In a very short amount of time, however, Jack and Skye were in the bedroom having passionate sex. While I didn’t disagree with the pairing, the author just didn’t give any reason as to why, short of the heat of the moment. Skye was emotionally upset after almost being killed, and the transition to them sleeping together after barely more than a conversation, and then only hours later professing their undying love and planning a future just felt rushed.
Following Jack and Skye through their journey was an exciting adventure, and I enjoyed the support Jack gave Skye as the story went on. I do wish I could have gotten to know Jack a little better, but Skye was a heroine who was easy to root for. Despite not being trained in the spy world, she held her own wonderfully as she fought to rescue her father. If you like a fast paced, quick read, this may pique your interest.
