The life of a merman should be relatively simple, but not for Danyl. His mother’s been murdered, his father’s responsible and now he’s out for blood. Thank the gods, the key to doing so rests in the hands of a beautiful human who is his pleasure to pursue.

Di has hit pay dirt. Years of solo dives on a barely functioning boat has yielded an ancient coin certain to secure her financial future. A chance rescue by a merman knocks her plans awry. Falling for him certainly was never a part of those plans.

Now, the two must depend on each other–extending a little bit of faith, and a whole lot of trust–in a quest for vengeance and their ultimate survival.

What do you get from the union of a demi- god and a merwoman? You get Danyl, a merman who doesn’t really fit in with the rest of the mer-people because his tail can all of a sudden turn into legs, which in the life of a merman can be a bit of a problem. Not to mention the fact that he really doesn’t look like the rest of the mermen, has other parts that result in what he calls unnatural sex. However, those are really the least of his problems. He has been the subject of ridicule, felt the alienation and the abandonment and the loneliness. He is shattered because he doesn’t fit. He dreams of acceptance………and yet he has just found out that his father, who he has never met, murdered his mother. Could anything else happen to the poor guy?

Enter Di who, while working from the Sea Anemone, found a silver coin that needs to be dated. She goes down to release the anchor and nearly drowns – only to be rescued by Danyl, who is surprisingly taken by the ‘human’. Everything about her attracts him – her silky smooth skin and her scent that makes him want to do things he shouldn’t be thinking of now, considering his mother’s murder.

Danyl is an intriguing character – strong, determined and obviously emotionally in need of a mate to complete him, but also quite untrained in the ways of human beings – his body is a source of various issues in its human form –his legs, and his wonder about his penis when he is close to Di is quite funny – I think that his reaction is something that no hot blooded male would ever have!

It is only when Danyl realizes that Di has the key he is after that they reach an impasse. He wants it and she also needs it. Will she give him the key so that he can avenge his mother’s death? His father killed her just because she dared to have Danyl.

Will their venture into the world of the demi-gods be successful, or will one of them lose their life in the process of avenging the death of a loved one?

This is a short story, but it packs a lot – it has to as it is the first in the series. There is also a prologue provided which sets the background and also in a way predicts that there will be other stories and the first half of the story is used to set the scene so to speak. Despite this, I enjoyed reading about Danyl and Di – it was refreshing to encounter the offspring of a demi- god who wasn’t arrogant or supremely self assured. Danyl’s character was a breath of fresh air in a somewhat jaded and stale world of alpha males who are determined, good in bed, gorgeous to look at and who often don’t possess a drop of humility.

I will definitely be keeping an eye out for other books in the series, just to find out more about the world that Ms. Carney has created and to see who else is involved in this tale of prophesy, revenge and love. Well done Ms. Carney – keep them coming!!
