The rules are simple. Be quiet, look sexy, follow orders.

Caroline’s plans for maintaining a harem of eager young men are going as smooth as could be, until a troublesome newcomer arrives and throws her tidy kingdom into disorder. He seems perfect at first. Breathtaking eyes, gorgeous face, a body custom-made to keep a greedy woman up nights.

But Sean’s got something else too—the will and the power to get under Caroline’s skin in a way she can’t stand. And can’t stay away from. He’s too disobedient to work out as a disposable toy in her harem, but it’d be a shame to waste a willing body as fine as his… Perhaps all the man needs is a little discipline.

What’s a woman to do in the midst of a mid-life crisis? Hire a harem!

When I cracked this ebook, I looked so forward to it. The more I got into it, my excitement waned a bit. The plot is interesting enough… Caroline was jilted by her ex, so why not turn her pain into pleasure by making men into objects? She gets what she wants out of them and sends them on their way. What really confused me was why she had to be so blunt and unfeeling. I wanted to like her. I wanted to sympathize with her. But she acted so cool, it was hard to see her reasoning for behaving the way she did.

Sean is an enigmatic hero. He wants her to want him. I liked his determination and his submission to her to prove that he wanted to be the one for her.

The sex is hot but a tad blunt. I wanted to see more emotion on his side. What was his motivation for his actions and why not another way? Some parts seemed written hot just for sex’s sake and not so much to advance the story.

Still, I liked the novella. The sex was hot and the characters interesting. I wasn’t totally keen on the ending, but then again, it worked for the plot and left the idea open for more.

If you want story with plenty of heat, then read Brazen. I give this story 3.5 cherries.

  1. Thanks so much for the thoughtful review, Tiger Lily! Readers so far seem to either love or hate Brazen, so you’re one of the minority who fell solidly in the middle. Caroline is an odd narrator, I know—I can’t fault anyone for finding her glib and self-preserving crust tough to crack. I also can’t recommend that anyone who demands an unequivocal happily-ever-after ending read my books. I tend to write vignettes that revolve around sex and infatuation, and while I don’t leave my characters weeping over graves or plotting jilted lovers’ revenge, my stories don’t usually wrap themselves up in a pink satin bow and ride off on a horse. The length and focus precludes that. Though I like to leave my characters panting and happy whenever possible!

Thanks again for your time and thoughtfulness in reviewing Brazen!

    All the best,
    Cara McKenna
