Violet is on the verge of a new job, in a new place. She meets Jake on the night in celebration to her, and she allows him to sweep her off her feet. It wouldn’t be anything more. Violet likes to think by the book. She doesn’t make room for dreaming. She can be very straight laced. I had mixed feelings about Violet. For the most part, I liked her. There’s a situation where she lies about something pretty important, which I don’t understand at all, and that bothered me the most.
Jake is a wanderer. But that’s part of his job. He’s always on the go, but he’s a good man with a kind heart. A decision now must be made, and Jake struggles with it throughout the book. He tries to step up and be there for Violet, when she isn’t pushing him away. These two have a long way to go if they’re ever going to be a team, on the same side.
I enjoyed this story right from the start. The characters such as Jake, Violet, Jake’s Uncle, and few others made for a truly delightful read. There is one man, Richard, that irritated me from the beginning. He’s not really a bad guy, just overly irritating. His job is to add tension to story and he does it well.
The story flow is great, and the situations the pair find themselves in are so true to life, that it can happen to anyone. Ms. Palmer creates plenty of conflict and emotion in this story. If you’re a fan of heartwarming contemporaries, why not give this book a try?
