With the devil in charge, there will surely be hell to pay…

What happens when a struggling actress and a grieving widower come together in a night of unbridled debauchery orchestrated by a bored and machinating rake?

***

She’s a lonely lady down on her luck.

Phoebe Scott, alias Kitty Willis, is a struggling Covent Garden actress with a bruised heart and a closely guarded secret.

He’s steadfast and eminently respectable.

Sir Edward Chambers, Ned to his intimates, is guilt-ridden over his beloved wife’s death and has avowed to live out a rustic and mundane life…of celibacy.

With the devil in charge, there will surely be hell to pay.

Devil-in-disguise Viscount Ludovic DeVere is determined to return his best friend, Ned, to the land of the living. His meddling machinations result in a night of mind-blowing passion after which “Dull Dog Ned” awakes to find himself in the King of England’s bed!

“A little drink goes a long way” would be an understatement where Sir Edward “Ned” Chambers is concerned. On the plus side he met and became VERY acquainted with the lovely and adventurous Kitty Willis, who he later learns is actually named Phoebe. On the down side he woke up in the King’s bed at St. James Place with only a fuzzy memory of how he came to be there – The Hangover meets 18th century England and it’s a wild ride.

Author Victoria Vane has penned a humorous tale involving three people with three very different agendas.

Ned is a widower who comes to town to set up a house so his daughter can make her debut on society, at least that’s his story. He’s said it often enough, he even believes it. As the story progresses it becomes clear that Ned needs more than a house, he needs to heal. Ned is pretty straight laced so it was amusing to watch him come to terms with falling in love, or at least lust, with the precocious Phoebe. I couldn’t wait to see how his family, old Georgian aristocracy, would react to him falling for an actress. Ms. Vane didn’t disappoint!

Phoebe, or Kitty as she’s known for a good part of the story, took to the stage out of necessity but she’s actually pretty good at what she does. Her talent comes in handy when she, along with Ned and Viscount DeVere, break into the King’s residence on a dare. She’s there to secure her future but it doesn’t turn out the way she planed. Clever disguises, quickly constructed lies and pulse racing excitement had me laughing out loud on more than one occasion.

The third piece of this dynamic trio is Lord DeVere. He’s the friend we all want but only a few would actually claim. Don’t worry over hurting his feelings, even he knows he’s mostly worthless. But, he is rich and as of very recently, he’s become bored with life in general. He wants some excitement, something dangerous to get his blood pumping, something he’ll either always remember or die trying. I felt pity for DeVere but I think Ms. Vain has something or rather someone in store for him. He’s liable to get more excitement than he bargained for. I look forward to finding out.

Ms. Vain does an excellent job of keeping the story in the Georgian time period with both costume and dialogue. I never once felt the story slipped out of place or time. The characters were well built and easy to like. I wanted Ned and Phoebe to have their happily ever after and was curious to see how the daughter would be brought into the picture. There is also a family friend that obviously had aspirations to be the next lady in Ned’s life. I thought she might cause some problems for Ned and Phoebe but she obviously has enough issues of her own with Ned’s daughter making her debut.

All in all, this was a truly enjoyable story. Ms. Vane is an author I’ll continue to follow, especially to see how she tames the wickedly sensual Lord DeVere.
