New Orleans in 1849 was an interesting place and a great setting for this story. Ellie Monahan’s sister, Elaine, had a baby and died in childbirth. Before she dies, Elaine makes Ellie promise to take care of her daughter, Hope, and not let the baby’s father, Matthew, raise his daughter. In this day and age, this means that Ellie has to flee with Hope. Ellie does, with friends. The trouble is, Matthew is from a prominent family with resources. Suspense is created. Historical details are intact in this short story to involve the reader in this world.
Ellie is a strong character. She shows integrity and courage. Her friends are helpful secondary characters.
