The Most Romantic Person I Know by Francesca St. Claire

She fell in love at first sight at the age of fourteen and never stopped loving him ’til the day she died.

Growing up, I was often reminded of that great love as I watched the unique, consistent and dedicated way my mother loved my father.

I thought at times she was idealistic and in love with love because nobody could possible stay enamored with the same person that long.

But she did. Truly.

Her commitment to my father and to their marriage was absolute and rose above all other things. Her faith and trust in him was unshakable and exclusive—maybe with the exception of her God—and she remained true to him in body and soul to the end.

I remember well how her eyes shone when she spoke of her passion for him and I’ll never forget her dreamy look when she shared with me the circumstances of their first meeting. But what I truly miss is her total joy in welcoming him home at the end of the day. Every day. For forty-five years.

Her demonstrations of love —preparing his favorite dish, the dressing gown and slippers when he came home, her undivided attention to him—when I was younger seemed old-fashioned and subservient.

I was wrong.

To love, to truly love and show it in every gesture, word and thought is romantic and timeless.

How do I know that?

I’m married to the most romantic person I know and, with him, every day is the most romantic day of my life.

It’s not just the beautiful flowers he buys me for no other reason than to say “I’m thinking of you” or the opening of the car door and waiting until I get in—even in pouring rain—that defines him to me as the most romantic lover I know.

The sexy phone messages and naughty notes on the vanity mirror keep the spice and romance in our marriage, and so does a back rub after a long and hard day at work as well as a passionate look across a room full of people, or holding hands at the movies…

To me a true romantic person is consistent and genuine in the display of love, and I’m the luckiest person in the world to have known two such people.

Thank you both for being in my life, and for inspiring each and every one of my books.
