What happens when the goddess meets Mr. Right…but she absolutely can’t tell him who she really is?
After leaving his job as a cardiac surgeon, Dr. Aaron Samuels needs a new purpose in his life. Wanting to help his patients even if he can’t operate, he heads to the Puerto Rican rainforest to find a cure for heart disease. He never imagined he’d meet a beautiful, mysterious woman, especially not one talking to a frog in the middle of the jungle…

Gaia—a.k.a. Mother Nature—has had it with paranormals breaking her number one rule: Never reveal your supernatural powers to humans, not even your mate. Fed up, she transports to the rainforest, happy to converse with amphibians who don’t talk back. But Dr. Samuels is a much better conversationalist, and Gaia can’t wait to help him mend all those broken hearts he told her about.

When her attempts to help only complicate things between them, Gaia begins to wonder what would happen if she opened her heart and was honest with Aaron…and herself. Maybe her number one rule has been wrong all along…

Karma lifted her sunglasses. “How goes the challenge of the century, Sister?” She stretched her long legs over a lounge chair next to her private pool.

“More like the challenge of the millennia.” Fate plopped herself on the lounge chair beside her.

“I referred someone to you.”

Fate’s eyes widened. “Pan? You sent Pan?”

“No. Why? Did someone else send him?”

“I doubt it. He said he heard rumors and wanted to volunteer.”

Karma laughed. “What did you say?”

Fate sighed. “A resounding ‘Thanks, but no thanks.’”

“Good. I’m not sure he has ever made up for that horrible practical joke he pulled in the sixteenth century.”

“I confronted him on that. He seemed to think the whole thing was wildly exaggerated, and it may have been. You know writers…if the truth isn’t quite dramatic enough, they’ll embellish it. But he did give me something to think about. Instead of trying to find someone with opposite faults, I should be looking for someone with common interests. Faults can be overlooked if you’re happy and living a better life because of your mate.”

“Exactly true. Is that what you were doing? Looking for someone who is basically a saint?”

“No. Why would you say that?”

“Hon, our sister is so riddled with faults, I can’t think of anyone with opposing assets.”

Fate let out a huge sigh.

“Here.” Karma produced a pitcher of ice water and two tall glasses.

“Is that all you got?”

“I’m in need of hydration. If you want something else, get it yourself.”

Fate snapped her fingers and held a sparkling orange mimosa. “Some hostess you are.”

“I’m not hosting a party, Sister, and if I were, you’d be crashing it. I was just lying here, enjoying the sun. Alone.”

Fate rose. “Well, pardon me. I didn’t realize I needed an engraved invitation to come to you for support.”

Karma waved away her remark. “Sit back down. Of course I’m here for you if you need a shoulder to cry on.”

Fate shook her head. “Unbelievable. I’m not in tears. I just thought two heads would be better than one.”

“So you’re rethinking my offer to help. Hey, if you want me to come up with a list of assholes to punish by setting them up with her, I can help you and myself both.”

Fate laughed. “Yeah, right. Like any of our gods wouldn’t see that coming.”

“Who said it has to be a god?”

“What are you suggesting? A human who knows nothing of the paranormal world? That’s exactly what she doesn’t want.”

Karma shrugged. “Well, it’s either that or a paranormal. Flip a coin.”

Fate was about to laugh until she realized Karma might be onto something. There were plenty of men, both human and paranormal, who could give Gaia a run for her money—so to speak. And some knew about gods and goddesses, even worshipped them.

“Most men would cower from her, but there are a few with the self-confidence to stand up to her and not crumble when faced with her abilities,” Karma was saying.

“Perhaps…” Fate tapped her lip as she mentally ran through a list of men she’d destined for greatness but whom she hadn’t found mates for. There weren’t many. “Is there any world leader without a mate?” Fate asked.

“None who actually deserve one at the moment.”

“How about someone smart and selfless? Do you know of any heroes with very high IQs?”

“Aren’t those two things antithetical? How smart is it to run into a burning building or sacrifice yourself in another way?” Karma asked. “We’d be back to square one.”

Fate snorted. “Well, there goes the only suggestion the modern muses came up with.”

Karma gave a slight shrug. “Gaia isn’t all bad, you know. In fact, deep down, she has some very positive traits.”

Fate snickered. “Must be deeper than I’ve ever looked.”

Aaron wandered aimlessly around his large living room. He had immediately retired from the Boston hospital where he’d worked for thirty years as a cardiac surgeon. Kind of necessary since he’d been diagnosed with essential tremors. At last, he dropped into his favorite chair, and as soon as he did, his black-and-white cat jumped onto his lap.

“Hi, Cat. I’m sorry we never gave you a more imaginative name, but you came when Ruthie called, so in a way, it’s your fault.” He scratched behind the cat’s furry ear, and the feline began to purr. On the housekeeper’s day off like this, he had no one to talk to but his cat—not that he talked to Mrs. Rivera very much. He had to keep his family’s magical witch power a secret, and it was easier to do if he didn’t communicate much with people who had no knowledge of magic and the paranormal.

“Can I confide in you, Cat? Of course I can. You won’t tell anyone, will you, boy?” He sighed deeply. “My hand trembled during a transplant. I can’t afford to nick an artery if even one finger trembles.”

He ran his currently steady hand over the cat’s soft back. “I have a beautiful million-dollar home in Brookline, but what’s a home without a family in it? No offense. You’re part of the family, but you don’t take up much room. What are we doing here?”

He answered, “I’m talking to myself. That’s what I’m doing.”

He let out a huge groan. Despite feeling odd about it, he continued his musing aloud. “My wife died two decades ago. You weren’t around then. I’ve raised my daughters, and they’re both living their own lives in their own homes, starting families. My nest is empty. Again, no offense. We’ll call it empty-ish.

“I miss my daughters, who I could talk to frankly about our Wiccan roots. I have one useless power. The power of invisibility.” He chuckled bitterly. “I might as well be invisible right now. Couldn’t have gotten a useful power, like my girls’ power to save one life a day with supernatural intervention.”

Cheek resting against his fist, he thought about how pathetic he seemed. He couldn’t stand being this way. He hadn’t told anyone about his diagnosis. “Maybe it’s a good thing they’re not here. The girls would worry, and I don’t want to burden them.

She didn’t see this hot cop coming.

Dawn Forrest is ready for a big change. She’s determined to put her criminal past behind her and only use her extraordinary psychic abilities for good from now on.

Luca Fierro is a Phoenix shifter and rookie cop with something to prove. The last person he should tangle with is a newly reformed bad girl, especially one as irresistible as Dawn. But he needs her help to find a missing child, and every minute counts. This case is going to put their skills to the test and force them to keep their sizzling attraction at bay…

Enjoy an Excerpt

Instead of going straight home, Luca parked nearby and started to walk off his hurt and frustration. He wasn’t in the best part of town, but he didn’t care. He wasn’t in the best mood either. How the heck had he gotten to this point in his life? Up until a short while ago, he had been hopeful about his future. Now, he wasn’t so sure. Still wearing his police uniform, he stuffed his hands in his jacket pockets and walked aimlessly with his head down.

Half an hour later, nearing the fountain of the Christian Science Center, a popular destination for tourists and locals alike, he barely noticed the regal elegance of the domed structure overlooking the calm reflecting pool. But in the quiet of the early morning, his ears perked up in sudden alert when he heard a woman’s strained gasp.

He glanced up and saw a young woman standing near the fountain. She was about five six with short, spiky brown hair, wearing a black leather jacket. Neck tattoos and a lot of piercings gave her a bad-girl vibe, but what was even odder was that she was staring right at him, wide-eyed. Then she passed out.

“Shit,” he muttered and ran over—faster than a human could. Worried she could wind up with a concussion, he cradled her head before she hit the pavement. He shook her shoulder and shouted, “Hey! Are you all right?”

Eventually, she opened her eyes. Big gray-green eyes. Unusual. Supporting her back, he helped her sit up.

“What’s the matter?” He was tempted to ask if she’d ever seen a cop before, but that was because he was in a crappy mood. Sarcasm aside, he was trained not to assume what was going on in a person’s brain. Asking open-ended questions would gain more information.

“I…saw blood.” She paused and closed those big green eyes again, taking a deep breath. “I always faint at the sight of blood.”

“What do you mean? You saw an accident or someone get hurt?” Luca gentled his voice in concern. Perhaps she’d witnessed a murder and had a delayed reaction.

She shook her head and reached out to grasp his hand. “Look, this may sound crazy,” she said, “but I’m a psychic. I saw you walking this way, and I got a dreadful feeling. Did something just happen to you? I see auras and have premonitions. Your aura is just…well, terrible. Then I had a vision. I saw you covered in blood.”

Blood? Luca helped her to stand. He believed in psychics—the genuine kind. After all, he was a shapeshifter, and he came from a family of shifters. But there were a lot of charlatans out there.

Given where his head was at after just being dumped by Lisa, he could only imagine what kind of energy he was giving off, let alone his aura…but blood? This chick could just be some wacko.

He folded his arms. “Do you want money to tell me more?”

“No! I’m not like that. I help people. Maybe the accident I just saw is something you can prevent from happening.”

He cocked his head. “You saw an accident? Where?”

“On a side street. It looked like an older part of town. They were just kids. Maybe sixteen or seventeen at the most. It looked like they were drag racing. A little kid rode his bike into the street and he was struck by one of the cars.”

“What does that have to do with me?”

“I don’t know. Sometimes I see through other people’s eyes. I think I was looking through yours.”

Luca wanted to stay openminded in case she was the real deal.

“Some more weird energy is clinging to you,” she went on, her expression seeming earnest. “I think it has to do with other people in your life. Your aura is red. Angry. But it feels justified—and not just that. I-I feel as if someone is out to get you.”

Who could be out to get him? Was it just his fellow cops, taking advantage of the rookie? Doubtful. That was just for their own chuckles and part of the usual hazing. Something all newbies went through.

No, his dark mood was due to getting dumped. Lisa had acted strange that morning, but he didn’t see her as a danger. Did she have someone else already, and maybe that someone considered him a threat?

He was still mulling over the possibilities when the spiky-haired girl pulled out a card and wrote her name and number on the back.

“I’m sorry if you think I’m trying to take advantage of you. I’m not. Knowing that cops are usually close-minded about psychics, I wouldn’t have even bothered, except I think you’re in danger. And those kids certainly are.”

Glancing at the card, he saw the name she’d written. Dawn Forest. He flipped the card over. It read ScholarTech: Academic Software for Brilliant Minds.

“Is that your real name?”

“Yeah. If I were going to come up with a fake name, it would be better than that.”

“You mean something exotic, like Zelda the Magnificent?”

She laughed. “No. Something like Susan Jones. I don’t think my mom realized how many times people would ask me if my name was fake or if my middle name was ‘inthe.’”

“So you work at this software company?” He wondered why someone who looked like her, with her tats and piercings, would be working for a company that created academic software.

“Yes, I just started there last month. Someday, I’ll get my own business cards instead of the generic ones.”

“Your look doesn’t exactly scream ‘corporate head office.’”

“Well, your assumption is outdated,” she retorted, hands firmly on her hips. “I have a college degree and was top in my class. Not to mention, I’m the only person at ScholarTech, including the engineers, who can recite the entire software manual by heart.”

“Wow. And you’ve only been there a month? How did you learn everything in so short a time?”

“I have a photographic memory.”

“You’re a psychic and you have a photographic memory? Shouldn’t you be raking in the big bucks on Wall Street?” Luca flashed her his trademark grin. It usually got him out of hot water. She smiled back and visibly relaxed.

He took a good look at her, past the tats and piercings and spiky hair, and noticed how pretty she was. Her nose was slightly turned up and covered with cute freckles. The tiny diamond stud in her left nostril almost got lost among them. Her hair made her look like a pixie. Maybe the badass tattoos and piercings were a way to counteract all that cuteness and be taken seriously.

“So do you do anything with your psychic talent, professionally?”

“Like working at a tea room? Or doing parties? No.”

“Anything other than stopping strangers on the street?”

She looked at her feet and kicked at the pavement with the end of her leather-booted toe. “Sometimes. If friends ask me for help, I do what I can for them.”

There was something about her body language that had him questioning that statement.

He tucked her business card into his jacket pocket. “It was nice to meet you, Dawn Forest. I should be getting home though. I worked the night shift, and I need to get some sleep.”

“Okay. Watch your back,” she said and returned to her spot by the fountain to retrieve her backpack.

Noah scanned the busy club. The lights were low, but it didn’t matter. Having paranormal eyesight was a plus in these situations. “Let’s walk the perimeter clockwise and check out the girls facing us, then get something at the bar and go back the other way.”

Dante chuckled. “Yeah. If we swiveled to check out the chicks on the other side of the tables, it would be a little obvious what we’re doing.”

“Exactly.”

Noah led the way, making a note of the women Dante might like. Their taste in women differed greatly. That had been a plus, and would continue to be as long as he could find a gorgeous blonde with an athletic build for Dante sitting with a petite brunette for himself.

The guys had passed only four booths when some big lug coming toward them barreled into Noah, knocking him sideways. To his shock and embarrassment, he fell and landed hard in the lap of some poor, unsuspecting woman. She squeaked a sound of surprise, but didn’t say “owww.”

“I’m sorry. Are you okay?” He scrambled to slide off her lap. As he gazed at her face, her beautiful brown eyes widened.

She looked familiar, and suddenly, it struck him. He had met her only that morning. “Dr. Samuels?” He struggled to leave the booth when she placed a warm hand on his arm.

“I’m fine. Are you okay?”

He paused at the end of the bench without getting up. Her voice was soft and kind. This was not the Dr. Samuels he’d spoken to sharply that morning.

She scooted over to make room for him. “I’m sorry about our disagreement earlier. How’s your friend?”

The woman on the other side of the table, who looked similar to the good doctor, slid over and patted the bench next to her. “Join us,” she said to Dante.

He grinned. “Sure.”

There was some kind of twinkle in his brother’s eye. Noah didn’t know whether that was a good thing or not. Hopefully, he was willing to consider a pretty brunette.

“She’s not exactly my friend. Just an acquaintance. Someone we knew in high school.”

“I don’t even know your name,” Dr. Samuels said.

“Jesus. I’m an idiot.”

“That’s an unusual name and job description…”

Noah laughed and extended his hand. “Noah Fierro, and this is my brother Dante. We’re firefighters.”

She smiled and shook his hand. “And I’m Kizzy. This is my sister Ruth. She’s a labor and delivery nurse.”

“Kizzy? That’s an unusual name.”

“It’s a form of the name Keziah. I used to hate it, but now that the mean kids have grown up, I kind of like being different.”

“Mean kids? Did you get teased about your name when you were younger?”

She rolled her eyes. “I’ve heard them all. Dizzy Kizzy. Crazy Kizzy. And on humid days, even Frizzy Kizzy.”

Noah chuckled, then quickly schooled his expression. “I like it.”

“Does that mean you like her now?” Dante asked.

Noah wanted to kick his brother under the table, but that wouldn’t look immature at all, he thought sarcastically. “If she likes me… At least it seems like she’s not mad at me anymore.”

Kizzy laughed. “I was never really angry. I was just frustrated, and I guess I took it out on you. I’m sorry for my part in that argument. It was a crazy morning. Now that I’m off duty and I’ve had one of these lovely things”—she lifted her empty wineglass—“I’m feeling more relaxed.”

“Let’s get you another,” Dante said. “What are you drinking?” He pointed to both Kizzy’s and Ruth’s wineglasses.

The women glanced at each other, as if they could communicate without words as easily as he and Dante could.

Ruth answered. “We both just finished a glass of Shiraz.”

Dante rose. “Two more glasses of Shiraz it is. Ruth, would you like to come with me? I’ll need someone to carry Noah’s and my Coronas.”

“I’m getting a Corona, I guess,” Noah said to Kizzy.

“It’s Cinco de Mayo. Would you rather have a margarita?”

“Nah. You had it right the first time.”

Dante shook his head. “He’s not usually this much of a smart-ass,” he said to Kizzy. “You must bring out the worst in him.”

LOCKED IN A BANK VAULT TOGETHER
THEY MIGHT REDEFINE THE MEANING OF ‘SAFE’ SEX

Misty Carlisle works as a bank teller in Boston’s financial district. She’s had more rotten luck in her life than most, except when her childhood crush shows up to cash his paycheck. Then her heart races and her mouth goes dry.

Gabe Fierro is a firefighter—and a phoenix. Like his brothers, his biggest challenge is finding a woman open-minded enough to accept a shapeshifter into her life. When his boyhood friend asks him to watch over his little sister Misty, he reluctantly agrees. But when the bank where she works gets held up, Gabe does everything he can to protect her. The two of them end up locked in the bank’s vault…where things get steamier than either of them ever imagined.

Enjoy an Excerpt

Misty’s party didn’t break up until after midnight, so she wasn’t surprised when she woke to the sting of the fully risen sun. She sat up and rubbed the sleep from her eyes. The evening came flooding back, especially the part where Gabe made a quick appearance and disappeared like a magician in a cloud of panic.

Her friends apologized and giggled and wanted to run after him, but thank goodness, she talked them out of that.

He would have been mortified. Correction, more mortified. “Should I call him? I was waiting for him to come to me,” she muttered to herself. Well, he’d done that.

She wandered out to the kitchen and made her morning coffee. Her one splurge was good coffee. She’d bought one of those special French presses that made two cups of strong, dark Kona roast. She needed it this morning.

As she waited for the water to boil, she tried to phrase what she would say. Hey, Gabe… Was that you who barely escaped with your underwear last night? She couldn’t help giggling. Maybe she could tease him, saying he could have a part-time job delivering strippergrams.

She shook her head, picturing the big somber guy he’d become handling any of that well. He would probably stammer and change the subject. How had he become so serious? She didn’t remember him that way.

He was always on the quiet side, but with Parker, he was able to talk and laugh. She guessed that in a family of nine, somebody had to be quiet.

But it’s not like he needs to be with me. Well, whatever she said, it had to happen soon. If she
let it go, it would look like she hadn’t cared what her friends did. If the shoe were on the other foot, he’d be right there apologizing for his friends—probably after he knocked down anyone who touched her. That made her smile…then wonder at herself. She certainly wouldn’t want to inspire anyone to violence. But it would be nice to know he cared. A little.

She sighed deeply and finished making her coffee. After a few fortifying sips, she located her phone. On her way to her closet, she realized she had forgotten to charge it. “I guess that dumb landline will come in handy after all, Parker.”

She felt a little foolish talking to her brother as if he were in the room instead of far away. What to tell him had also been weighing on her mind. The tests weren’t looking good. She’d been told there were lesions and she should see a specialist. They needed to know if the disease was active or not.

The disease. Yeah. They’d ruled out everything except MS. They hadn’t made it official yet, but it seemed only a matter of time before they ran out of other tests and explanations.

Suddenly, she felt ill. Nausea was an early symptom, but she hadn’t had that one yet. Chills invaded her, and a sweat broke out on her forehead. She dashed for the bathroom and made it to the toilet bowl just in time. Last night’s pizza made a reappearance along with a lot of pink fluid. Ugh. Too much wine. It must have been the wine.

When she was able to get up, she brushed her teeth viciously, trying to get every crevice and taste bud clean. Then she dressed in jeans and a sweater, her usual Sunday morning attire. Even if she did feel like going to church, which she didn’t, she could go like this. No one got all dressed up at the church she belonged to. Boy, am I feeling lazy.

“Well, I have to call him,” she said and strolled to the living room where she kept the landline on an end table.

After a couple of rings, Gabe answered. “Misty?”

“Yeah, hi. Sorry about last night. Are you okay?”

He laughed. “I’m fine. It was flattering in a bizarre way.”

“Well, I’m glad you’re looking at it like that. I’m really sorry for my friends. When we all get together, we can act a little…wild.”

“You probably needed to go a little wild.”

She relaxed. “I did. But I wasn’t feeling too great this morning. I didn’t think I had that much to drink, but I must have. Oh well. Live and learn.”

“Are you feeling okay now?”

“Yeah. Perfectly fine.”

“Good. Would you like some company?”

Her brows shot up. “Seriously?” That popped out before she had a chance to think it through. Of course she wanted his company!

“Unless you’re busy,” he added.

“No. I was just planning on having a lazy, do-nothing day. I’d welcome your company.”

“Okay. Maybe I’ll bring a board game. Do you still like Risk?”

“You’re kidding. You still have that?”

“Yup. We’re Yankees, Misty. Perfectly good games aren’t thrown away, even if nobody plays with them much. You know the Yankee motto…”

“Yeah, I’ve heard it. Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without. Okay then. Bring it. I guess you got over your aversion to taking a risk?” She almost slapped her hand over her mouth. Did I just say that? Way to sabotage yourself again, Misty.

After a brief pause, he said in a quiet voice, “I might be getting there.”

After he hung up, she ran around like a demon, cleaning up after the party, vacuuming, dusting, and paying special attention to the bedroom. By the time he got there, she was pooped.
