No Other Duke But You by Valerie Bowman – Spotlight and Giveaway

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Valerie Bowman who is celebrating today’s release of No Other Duke But You, the next book in her Playful Brides series. Leave a comment or ask the author a question for a chance to win a paperback copy of her book *US only*.

A lady with a love potion. A Duke who takes it by mistake. Romance and mischief ensues when plans go awry in No Other Duke But Youby Valerie Bowman.

SINGLE LADY SEEKS DUKE

Lady Delilah Montebank has her marital sights set on the Duke of Branville. There’s just one problem: he barely knows she exists. But no matter, she’s got a plan to win him over with her charm, her wit—and perhaps the love potion she has in her possession wouldn’t hurt her cause…

Lord Thomas Hobbs, Duke of Huntley, thinks his best friend Delilah’s quest to become a duchess is ridiculous. He’s always said he’d rather give up all the brandy in London than commit to one person for life. Besides, he knows that Delilah’s love potion can’t possibly win over Branville…since she accidentally gave it to him instead. But perhaps this is the excuse he needs to show her he’s always loved her…

Delilah can’t believe she gave the potion to the wrong duke. Then again, Delilah could do a lot worse than win the hand of her handsome best friend. Could it be that the right duke has been before her eyes all along?

Delilah glanced up and down the dim hallway. It was well past three in the morning, she was still dressed in the pink ball gown she’d worn to the party, and she clutched the small vial of Cupid’s Elixir in her sweaty, guilty palm. She pressed her back against the shadowed wall not far from the Duke of Branville’s bedchamber. She could do this. More importantly, she would do this. She’d come this far, hadn’t she? What did a little sneaking about in the middle of the night matter?

She’d got detailed instructions to Branville’s room from Derek, who thankfully hadn’t asked any questions about why she wanted to know. According to him, the room was four doors to the right, just past the staircase on the third floor. The third floor was where all the bachelor gentlemen were sleeping. It would be a complete scandal if she was found lurking about alone at this time of night, but she’d waited until the household seemed quite asleep and then waited a bit longer for good measure. Anyone who saw her now would be skulking about themselves, which meant they would hardly be in a position to judge her. She briefly wondered if she’d run into Lavinia.

It was not as if she was out to do anything particularly scandalous. It was more silly and frivolous than anything else. She’d simply die, however, if Branville woke up and asked her what she was doing sprinkling pixie water in his eyes. She’d already decided to pretend as if she were dreaming, thinking she was Puck in the play. Sleepwalking. That would make all the sense in the world. Wouldn’t it? She swallowed hard. Probably not, but she wasn’t about to let the fear of being caught stop her. Besides, all of her and Lucy’s matchmaking had turned into a colossal mess. If a spray of perfume could sort it out, so be it. Of course, Delilah’s conscience reminded her that she hadn’t offered any of the perfume to Rebecca to use on Thomas. She didn’t want to even contemplate that. She’d already shared it with one other person, and that made her guilty enough. The image of Madame Rosa’s disapproving, craggy face had haunted her all evening.

Delilah shook off the thought and turned her attention back to the matter at hand. Pressing her empty palm against the darkened wall, she inched her way along until she came to Branville’s door. She felt like a spy. This was how professional spies did such things, wasn’t it? Too bad she was too embarrassed by her actions to ask the veritable house full of professional spies who happened to be asleep behind other doors right now.

She transferred the vial into her opposite hand and slowly reached to grasp the door handle. The metal was cold in her bare hand. She’d discarded her gloves, deciding that they would make her actions more clumsy. The last thing she needed tonight was to be more clumsy than usual. Decidedly, she needed to be less so.

She clutched the door handle like a lifeline and closed her eyes, steadying her shaking fingers on the knob. She was close, so close. Praying that the door wouldn’t squeak, she turned the handle slowly. The only sound was the thumping of her own heart in her ears.

When the handle was turned as far as it would go, she pushed it, praying fervently that it wasn’t locked. It took a moment before she realized the door was opening. Its hinges silent, merci a Dieu. Completely silent.

She slipped inside the cool, dark room. Steady, deep breathing came from the bed. Thank goodness, she hadn’t woken the duke with her entrance. She could barely see a thing, but she didn’t dare light a candle. A tiny stream of moonlight filtered into the room through a small opening in the curtains on the far window. She used that to identify the hulking bed in the center of the room. She tiptoed over to it slowly, taking care in case there was anything to trip over. No doubt she would find it if there was.

She made it to the foot of the bed without incident and paused, trying to quell her nerves and dispel her guilt. She clutched the vial more tightly in her palm, shaking with fear and anxiety. Now that she was here, she had no earthly idea how to drop liquid on a man’s eyes without awakening him. Besides, how much of it was she supposed to use? Surely not much. She would employ the tiniest drops possible so as not to disturb him, but she also needed to ensure the perfume touched his eyelids. Tricky business, this being a fairy. She had a sudden appreciation for Puck.

Holding her breath, she lifted her skirts with her free hand and tiptoed to the right side of the bed. Because it was summer, the bed curtains weren’t drawn. The window was open, and a slight breeze blew through the crack in the curtains.

The outline of the duke’s body was barely visible in the moonlight. He was turned away on his side, his back to her, his face toward the window. She would have to lean over his body to sprinkle the elixir on his eyes. The bed was tall. She must carefully climb up to do this task properly. She only hoped she didn’t jostle the mattress enough to wake him.

She waited in silence for a few moments to ensure his breathing remained steady, then she carefully lifted first one knee and then the other, bracing them on the mattress and pulling herself up, still clutching the vial. She winced as he moved slightly in his sleep, but he kept his face turned away. Blast it.

Once she was fully atop the bed, she paused and hoped the hammering of her heart didn’t wake him. He smelled good, a combination of soap and maleness that she wanted to breathe in. There was something vaguely familiar about his scent.
Shaking away that unhelpful thought, she moved gingerly across the mattress on her knees until she came to a stop at his side. His shirt was off. The beam of moonlight hit his smooth, muscled arm. She swallowed. The man’s chest was positively swoon-worthy. She took a deep breath to calm her nerves and uncorked the vial. Then she carefully leaned over as far as she could to locate his eyes. They remained shrouded in the dark, but she took a guess as to their general direction and tipped the little vial as slowly and carefully as she could. He turned then, and she was afforded enough light to see that the first tiny drop of liquid did indeed fall directly onto his eyelid.

He blinked, and she held her breath. When he settled back into sleep, she closed her eyes and said a brief prayer that she would get away with it a second time before tipping the vial once more to allow another tiny drop to fall on his other eyelid.

He blinked and rubbed at his eyes while Delilah held her breath again, paralyzed with fear. Soon, he settled back into his pillow and his breathing returned to its steady pace.

She pressed a hand to her throat. It was over. She was done. All she had to do was extract herself from the bed and the room without being seen or heard. The difficult part was behind her.

Still praying he wouldn’t stir, she backed away from the duke. Slowly. Slowly. She’d nearly made it to the edge of the bed when he flipped over to face her. A beam of moonlight slid over his sleeping features.
Delilah gasped.

Mimadamos by Chadi Ghaith – Spotlight and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Chadi Ghaith will be awarding a copy of Mimadamos: The Eden of Choice, (US only) to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Lebanese author Chadi B. Ghaith brings beliefs that were held in secrecy for a thousand years to awareness in Mimadamos: The Eden of Choice (Fifthscience Inc., July 5, 2017). Ghaith’s book revolves around an ancient triangle of the most significant characters on earth, paralleled by three of the most significant forces in life, and their combined story in space and time. Journey through this fable and explore the ideas that have mystified mankind for centuries: good and evil, heaven and hell, the beginning and end of the world.

Did the ending precede the beginning? Are we only here on earth to comprehend its machinations? Is there room for choice to shape our destiny in the wake of fate and its brutal logic? Mimadamos is a unique, philosophically-rich fantasy which journeys through the depths of conflict and harmony that we understand as the spirit. It decodes the magic of the most ancient scripts known to man, the symbolic fall from Eden and the long anticipated armageddon, revealing a logic so unique that it brings history to its conclusive end.

She had all the power in the world—could turn sand into gold if she so desired—but she had refrained from using it. What was the point of using magic? It was like playing a video game in which one was granted unlimited lives regardless of performance. Instead, Destiny had agreed to play the game of reality with all its inherent rules and unpleasantness.

So, although she had the ability to think herself into any place she liked, she preferred to travel there with sunshine, good food, the company of beloved souls, and unexpected adventures along the way. For it was in the journey, not the destination, that she took the most pleasure.

A person cannot wield unlimited magic, she thought. If one became all-powerful, one could create his own reality at will, which would make the person his own creator. But no one could stand being both the Creator and the Created in the same world, for that would engender
unbearable solitude.

Just then, the women started to ululate, pulling Destiny from her musings. The truth was, even without their celebratory wailing, she would have known that her groom was nearby; she could sense him.

It’s all been preordained, she thought as she steeled herself.

About the Author: CHADI B. GHAITH has spent many years introducing an ancient mind science called Fifthscience to the public; Mimadamos is his first attempt at translating the magic of Fifthscience into a modern narrative. He is a native of Lebanon; however, he acquired his high school and university levels in Texas. Ghaith studied Arts and Film at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. I don’t feel eyes on me for the rest of the afternoon, but I also don’t go back to the apartment or near my bug-out bag, hidden in the belfry of an abandoned church near the docks. I wander the town aimlessly, waiting for darkness to fall and thinking of a handsome man with linebacker shoulders and a slight limp in his gait named Nasir.

My friends call me Naz, he’d said, his piercing dark gaze full of secrets.

From his skin tone and facial features, I judged him to be Lebanese or Moroccan, though he had no discernible accent. Those tattoos snaking down the insides of his strong arms were definitely Arabic, but his clothing suggested he was an American tourist. If I hadn’t seen him take down an armed gang leader with one punch and calmly evade a hail of bullets, I’d have assumed he was just another man on holiday with his family, visiting Cozumel for its famed white beaches and breathtaking dive spots.

Obviously, he’s not just another man.

He’s a riddle.

I enjoy riddles, which makes me glad I won’t ever see him again. The last thing I need in my life at the moment is a complication.

Even if that complication is tall, dark, and handsome and saved my life without breaking a sweat.

I stop at my favorite café on the beach for a beer and fish tacos. From an app on my cell phone, I check the security system at my apartment. Everything is clear. Any movement within a certain radius will trigger the camera, and any breach of the perimeter will trigger an alarm, but no one has tried to break in or gotten too close for comfort.

At least for now.

Pensively watching the waves break and foam on the sand, I wonder if I might’ve been mistaken earlier. I’d been so sure someone was following me, but I have to admit there is the possibility my paranoia has gotten out of control. The reality is that in the three months I’ve been on this island, there’s been no indication that Dimitri has located me.

I was extremely careful when I left. I covered all my tracks. I meant for this escape to be my final one, and I spared no expense to ensure I was a ghost.

It was reckless that I told Naz my real name. I did it on impulse, without thinking, which isn’t like me. But those damn gorgeous dark eyes…

No matter. Whoever he is, he’ll be gone in days, pulled out with the tide like everyone else. The population of this island is mostly transient, which works well for me. A thousand new faces a week come and go, an ever-changing anonymous crowd one can melt into and hide.

Out of habit, I touch the gun in my pocket, absently thinking that freedom is worth every bit of hypervigilance it’s costing me.

Even if it’s far more lonely than I imagined it would be.

GODS. I’M AN IDIOT.
Without Griffin—and apparently a few meddling Gods—to push me along, I’d still be telling fortunes at the circus, lying about my past, ignoring my future, and living as far away from my tyrant mother as humanly possible.

True understanding thuds into place. Hope isn’t just an abstract concept; it’s me. Flesh and blood me. Griffin knew it all along. Probably everyone did. I’m an idea in human form.

I have the power of the Gods at my fingertips.
The only thing ever stopping me has been me.

Griffin’s hand tightens on my arm.

I roll my eyes. “I’m not going to fall in, you know. The cliff is all the way over there.”

He loosens his hold. Sort of.

I glance up at him, trying to tame my sudden smile. Domineering and overprotective doesn’t even begin to describe my husband. There’s also deliciously jealous, but that’s another subject all together. The black stubble framing his mouth makes his full lips look impossibly kissable. It’s been hours since they were last on mine. And I love to kiss the hawkish curve of his nose. So strong and masculine. I adore that nose. And the rest of him. His powerful body. Muscle. Sinew. Bone.

I gaze up at him, nearly sighing. “I love you.”

Griffin stops dead in his tracks and glares down at me. “That’s it. We’re leaving.”

I blink. “What? Why?”

“You think something terrible is going to happen.”

“No, I don’t.” I frown. “I don’t think so.”

His eyes narrow, wariness hardening his expression. “You do.”

“What are you talking about?”

He scowls at me.

“Well, something terrible could happen,” I concede. “But that’s always true, no matter where or when. Tomorrow, I could trip over my own feet and break my neck for all I know.”

Judging by the look on Griffin’s face, I don’t think that helped.

“You only say you love me or you’re sorry when you’re scared or almost dead. You’re not almost dead, so what’s scaring you?” he demands.

“I say I love you all the time!”

“When we’re in bed. When I’m so deep inside you that you can’t feel anything but me. Not when we’re about to knock on a stranger’s door. What’s scaring you?” he demands again.

I huff. “At the moment? The way your jaw is popping like it’s alive.”

Griffin crosses his arms. “I want honesty. Right now.”

“Right now, Your Imperialness?”

His nostrils flare. His hard look is spectacular.

I’m not intimidated. It makes me hot. Then again, so does just about everything at the moment, but not in the same way.

“If you must know, the magic around here is a little intense and…disturbing, but it’s not scaring me. Not really. It’s probably just something coming from whatever is down there in that God Pit,” I say, waving toward the cliff. “I’m a shade nervous. That’s all.”

His eyes stay flinty and unconvinced. “That’s all? That’s not generally cause for a heartfelt declaration, at least not from you.”

I toss my hands in the air. “Fine. I take it back. I looked at you, found you incredibly desirable, and my body got all hot and tingly. I blame pregnancy for an excess of sentimentality and…and…urges!”

Griffin stares at me. Then his mouth splits into a grin that makes me all kinds of angry. He reaches for me again, his grasp lighter this time.

“Incredibly desirable?” Looking smug, he threads his fingers through mine.

Scowling, I poke him in the chest with my free hand. “Well, you do have that whole overbearing warlord thing going on. Plus, plenty of muscles in all the right places, some good ideas, and, you know, a really big sword.”

A laugh cracks out of Griffin, and my heart swoops like an off-balance bird. He’s rarely free with humor these days, or maybe there’s just not enough of it in our lives anymore. The happy flutter that wings through my chest takes any lingering irritation away with it.

Gah! Talk about mood changes!

Griffin captures my other hand and then pulls me in to him until I’m standing between his legs. “I love you, too, Cat.”

He kisses me, his mouth pressing softly against mine. Warmth rolls straight from his lips to my toes, which curl in my boots.
“Tell me again,” he coaxes.

I shake my head, our noses brushing.

“Say it,” he demands against my mouth.

“I don’t think so.”

“Last chance,” he warns, gently nipping at my lower lip.

“Big sword.”

Chuckling, Griffin swats my bottom. “There’s more where that came from.”

I look up at him through my lashes. “I sure hope so.”

He grins. “I think you just managed coy.”

“Good Gods! Has the Underworld frozen over?”

“Next, Centaurs will fly.” He brushes his lips over mine again, not lingering, and when he lifts his head, his black hair ruffling on the faintly sulfurous wind, the teasing gleam is already absent from his eyes. “You’re sure there’s nothing else?”

“Nothing besides our baby wreaking havoc on my moods?” I shake my head. “But I wanted you before. I want you always.”

He lifts his hand and brushes his thumb across my lips. Then his fingers fall away, trailing lightly down my arm until I shiver.

“You’re the air I breathe,” he says without a trace of humor in his voice.

My whole chest clenches hard, squeezing a tight, almost painful beat from my heart. “I admire you,” I reply. “I need you. I love you with all my heart.”

Griffin offers me a different kind of smile this time, small, lopsided, gentle, and so entirely genuine. It fades almost immediately, though, and he straightens to his full, imposing height, abruptly pinning me with his warlord stare. “If you feel anything off here, we leave, with or without the potion we came for. You’ve got great instincts, Cat. Trust your gut.”

I nod. I will. I always do.

When a demon and a dragon get busy, “burning up the sheets” gets real.

Ten days of servitude to Teban, the dragon prince—James’s best friend. Such a light sentence has to have a catch, so James does what any good demon would do. He bolts.

His string of bad luck holds steady when he falls prey to a pretty woman with sharp teeth. Kihra is havoc, a race of lower-realm creatures even demons fear. When she joins forces with Teban, their torment becomes delectable sin. No vice is too addictive, no demand too brutal when it comes to satisfying his lovers’ needs.

All seems hellishly perfect—until the angels arrive for some payback. Kihra’s kidnapped, Teban is missing, and James suffers the beatdown of the millennium. But he has no intention of letting his lovers go, though he risks the wrath of the demon king, the ire of the dragons, and an angelic punishment that could start a world-ending war.

Steal a dragon egg…blame it on the angels…what could possibly go wrong?

James Sinclair learned that not all pranks are good ideas, especially if the dragon egg in question just happens to be a royal egg, and holds the next King of the Dragons. For his penance, his father Asael sentences him to ten days of servitude to Teban, prince of dragons and brother to the, now hatched, egg in question. While Teban is James’ best friend, James is not quite sure what is in store, so he does what any smart demon would, he runs. Unfortunately, James gets lost, and is caught by an adolescent Havoc, a race he knows nothing about other than they are extremely bloodthirsty and strong. When the young Havoc’s aunt comes along, she has decided she likes how James looks and decides she will keep him. When Teban catches up with James, he is also ‘taken’ by Kihra, and together Teban and Kihra decide to claim James as their own. Things heat up once Kihra and Teban take James back to Teban’s home and each of these three claims the others in a hot and steamy triad. When the angels kidnap Kihra as payback for the prank James started, will James be able to rescue her in time? Will Teban survive his impromptu visit with the Havoc deity Kingu and return in time to save James? Can James accept that he has feelings for both Teban and Kihra? Can these three stay together in the face of opposition from the Havoc and the angels?

Havoc and Hell is a return to Marie Harte’s Ethereal Foes world, where paranormal beings exist and passions run high. This tale gives a glimpse of beings that even the demons fear, a dangerous race known as the Havoc. This is a look into one of the lower realms, with the different beings that inhabit that world. I enjoyed the descriptions of the homelands of the Havoc, and the many ways it differs from what the inhabitants call ‘the Ordinary’ or the realm of humanity.

James Sinclair is a strong and smart demon, twin to Duncan and more than a bit of a rascal. It was his idea that started the whole mess, and now that he is to pay, he does what demons do best…he tries to escape his punishment. When he meets Kihra, he is drawn to her, and is a bit surprised by the strength of his attraction to the woman. I like James and his snarky sense of morality, and his determination to avoid his punishment. I also like that he is honest enough to admit it when he realizes his attraction to Teban as well as the one to Kihra.

Teban is the dragon prince, strong and handsome, and very determined to finally make James his mate. He also wants Kihra in his life as a mate as well. I like the chemistry that is so palpable when these three are together, and I was very impressed when Teban made the ultimate ‘sacrifice’ for Kihra. I like the passion that Teban lives his life with.

Kihra is a wild being, like no woman either of these two males has ever met. I like her combination of sensuousness and innocence, a seductress with a sweetness that shows in her wide eyed amazement of the dragon world. I also like that she is determined to ‘keep’ both James and Teban, claiming that they are hers because of her devotion to her deity, Kingu, as her reward for her life of service to Kingu and her people.

There are some interesting twists to this one. When the angels kidnap Kihra and lay the blame on the demons, there is threat of a war between demon kind and the Havoc, and Kihra must pretend to like Heaven until her rescue comes. There are secrets hinted at but left unsolved for now, and there is a mystery of what the new dragon king knows and his ultimate plan for everyone. I read this late one night and could not put it down. I recommend lots of ice water and tissues, because there are tears and laughter and scorching hot passionate encounters between James, Kihra and Teban.

Bianca Sommerland: Solid Education

Gage Tackett comes off as a bad boy—detached and maybe a little dangerous. Definitely not Vet Sciences Professor Derek Paulson’s type. When Gage arrives at Derek’s veterinary clinic with a frostbitten stray dog, Derek realizes his most difficult student has a few things to teach him. Things he’s more than willing to learn.

KyAnn Waters: Private Lessons

Ryan Kane could lose his scholarship and his position on the pitch. Jake Finely offers to help. Only Ryan and Jake discover their private lessons have more to do with sex ed than Business Ethics. Sara York: The Dust Of Everyday Life

Cole only has the courage to lust after the swim team from afar. When Seever asks to share a table at the packed coffee house where Cole is studying, he’s sure it’s a joke. But after one touch and one scorching kiss, Cole thinks the chance meet could lead to something with substance.

An anthology about gay men in a fictional campus surroundings of Cathia University, with an occasional common hangout, like Palozzo’s pizza joint.

Private Lessons by KyAnn Waters

A fairly simple and predictable tale about an out and proud teaching assistant and a closeted jock student. Both want the other in secret. When they realize the attraction is mutual, sex happens right off the bat. This story had no real tension or climactic scene, as Ryan’s coming out to his teammates is remarkably swift and accepting. The end result didn’t really justify Ryan’s fears of coming out. Also, a professor as bad as Turner should be booted off campus. Basically, a hot little fluff piece.

The Dust Of Everyday Life by Sara York

Cole is into music and Seever into swimming. They get together for some hot loving, and are outed in a paper by a homophobic so-called journalist who smelled a scandal and believed everyone would take her side. The writing in this story is okay but nothing special. When it comes to society’s attitudes toward gays, however, this paints a wonderful positive image of encouraging friends and strangers. So, not bad.

The Eloquent Jock by Cassandra Carr

Being a jock doesn’t mean one doesn’t have a brain. That was a nice twist in the set-in-stone jock character. Brendan plays hockey but he’s also an English lit major. I appreciated that aspect, how one thing doesn’t define you as a whole. A shy professor was also a nice change from the confident and even aggressive alpha male type, and I quite liked Scott, even though at times his reasons for resisting Brendan’s advances seemed a little thin. Nonetheless, the sex scenes are hotter than hot. I admit, too, prior to reading this story I’d never heard the term puck bunnies.

Switching Leads by Mia Downing

Lost lovers reconnecting after a decade. What could be hotter? The tension is already there in more ways than one. Since John, a coach for an equestrian team, has plenty of reasons to hate Finn, his alcoholic ex who is also his new assistant, this read like enemies-to-lovers story, which I liked a lot. Making amends through hot angry sex? Why not. Plus, the memories of what they shared, the good and the bad, added a touch of beauty to their reconciliation.

Solid Education by Bianca Sommerland

A cute little rescue dog, Matty, totally steals the show here, which was good since the characters didn’t grab me. Derek, a veterinary professor, is something of a jerk. Gage, a veterinary student and ex-military man, has traumas, injuries, and a dead K-9. Derek was really mean to Gage a lot, and I didn’t like that. Sure, Matty the dog does bring out Derek’s softer side but by then I already disliked him too much to care. Gage deserved better in my honest opinion. In any case, I found that this tale didn’t quite fit with the overall campus theme. Just felt like the odd story out, so to speak. The sudden one-eighty to love baffled me too.

Did Somebody Order a Pizza? by L.A. Witt

This story was very well written. Especially the flashbacks to Paul and Cory’s student days had quite an impact, reading as awkward and realistic. But… there was a really bad hazing incident and a subsequent breakup. Cory wants Paul back, but I wanted Paul to kick Cory’s tail. Cory was not a likable character, and Paul forgave much too soon. This tale of too quick a redemption, told in first person, left a bitter taste in my mouth. There’s so much hate and violence and cowardice here it was a bit of a downer.

Winning Bracket by Annabeth Albert

By far the best of the bunch, this story delivers where the others in the anthology have failed. We get a beautiful, awkward, cute, realistic love affair even though Edwin and Ollie start out as sort of frenemies (that’s a word, right?). A silly bet over basketball leads to a kiss, and much, much more. Edwin may be the sweet little virgin but he wants his kiss, dammit, and he wants it from popular jock Ollie. I loved their interaction, be it talking or smooching, teasing or goading. Beautifully crafted tale of two young men playing games, bantering, and falling in love. Made me miss real life kissing sessions.

Artistic Endeavor by Whitley Gray

Two artists—a graphic design professor (at 25?) and a painter—are brought together because one is knowledgeable about sex and the other is a virgin. Yeah, the story’s predictable in every sense. But both Michael and Cobey were kinda cute, the former playboy who falls in love for the first time and the other a virgin who finds love on his first go. Even when Michael hurts Cobey’s feelings by rejecting him, I got that Michael’s just scared and falling. There’s a lot of kissing, adorable moments, emotions shared, and a slowly forming relationship. This is the longest story in the anthology. Despite the no-surprises plot, the ending was sweet.

The Heckmasters, Book 1

Certain that an ad for a job in a small New Mexico Territory town is the answer to her prayers, Nebraska schoolteacher Rhia Duke packs her sister into a rickety wagon and heads west.

Except when they reach the near-deserted town, she learns the truth. There is no job, no future, and no welcome in the bleak blue eyes of the handsome sheriff.

The minute Rhia’s runaway team thunders into town, Wystan Heckmaster feels the change in the air. One of three sons of a demon who dared love a human, he keeps watch over a Pit guarded by seven seals, and slays any Hellbound demon that attempts to free the master imprisoned within.

With a gut full of regret and a forgotten town filled with reformed demons, Wystan is certain of one thing: he can’t be the man Rhia needs. But when the truth behind Rhia’s flight from Nebraska comes to light, Wystan must open his soul—and pray there’s enough love between them to overcome the darkness rising from the Pit.

A search for safe shelter has brought them to a town filled with otherworldly creatures.

Rhia Duke arrived in an almost non-existent town looking to apply for the schoolteacher’s position that was advertised.

Upon arriving with her younger sister, Sylvia, and friend, Beryl who is sick, Rhia finds out there is no job for her there. But due to the weakened state of her friend she, along with her small entourage, is given permission to stay in town. During that time she uncovers a legacy about demons, second chances, love and death.

Wystan the eldest of the three brothers is absolutely against the new arrivals staying. However, in time he falls in love with Rhia. The romance and passion that is between them is a wonder. Their relationship developed. By the end I could see their love for each other and their strength. Except, will they have a Happily Ever After?

The Heckmasters intrigued me from the start and it was well worth the time fantasizing about what their story is.

I expected demons to star in this but not the other creatures. But it was pleasant and nice. I really wanted to know more about these creatures. Not a full biography but, enough to understand them.

There are three Heckmasters in this story. The eldest Wystan, then Eban, last but not least, is Tell. There was one other female Heckmaster, Sabrina. But what happened to her will be explained in this book.

Wystan, as the eldest, wants to save the town. There are questions that still remain. I think these answers will come with Eban and Tell’s stories. I was hooked with Wystan’s story and how it ended. So, I am very much going to read the other books.

I believe The Heckmasters series is going to be a hit with paranormal loving readers.

Come on, Spring! By Misty Simon

Here in Central Pennsylvania, we keep getting just a taste of Spring before it gets yanked away by the snow. I love the fluffy, white stuff, don’t get me wrong. Who can resist snow angels? Impromptu snow ball fights? Dogs who come in with white beards from playing alongside you? But I would love real Spring to please stand up!

This time of new growth and budding things always makes me think of stories, of love and of the promise of new beginnings. I adore stories about reunion romances and second chances for two people who maybe just didn’t get it right the first time. But those about first chances and new love? Well, those I gobble up like the fluffy marshmallow birds that are so popular this time of year.

Who doesn’t love to go on the joy ride, or even the roller coaster of two people finding each other, struggling through their issues and their barriers to break down walls and let someone else, someone who doesn’t necessarily complete them, but complements them, in? I love that hope, that growth, that joy in turning the last page, signing out a sigh of YES! and wishing the happy couple all the luck in the world to build off their mutual foundation.

It’s what I do, it’s why I do this crazy thing called writing romance. And it’s why at this time of year, when the birds are singing and the flowers are emerging from the ground and opening their beautiful blooms, I wish you love happiness and a giggle or two!

CHEATING AT CHRISTMAS

When I was growing up, I was notorious for searching out presents hidden in the house. Mom, in desperation to keep me out of them, took to keeping the presents locked in the trunk of the car until Christmas Eve when she spent half the night wrapping them. Even wrapped presents weren’t safe from me.

Every year a box would arrive from Tennessee with presents from my grandparents and two aunts, usually all of them contained some sort of clothing item. The year I turned eight, my box was unusually heavy. Now my curiosity was piqued! I’d lift the box and slowly shake it. Something heavy scooted from one end to the other.

What could it be?

Left alone with the Christmas tree one day while my mother was shopping, I couldn’t stand it anymore. That was the day I became super expert unwrapping the taped end of a package to see what was inside. I slowly lifted the tape, until it gently released without tearing the paper.

I’d done it! Now to look inside.

Pushing back the paper, I slide the box out. Inside was of course a soft green sweater, but more importantly, the heavy object that had driven me nuts? A book. Not just any book. No, my aunts had sent me The Secret Of The Old Clock, A Nancy Drew Mystery!

Afraid of being caught, I quickly slipped it all back in the box and rewrapped it, making sure the tape stuck and the side I’d opened was hidden from my mom.

But the next day, all I could think about was that book. I’d never read a Nancy Drew book. Would I like it? Would the mystery be scary? What was the secret of the old clock?

It took two more days, but one night I snuck down, opened the present again, just as careful as before, then snuck the book up to my room. I read for about an hour, getting to know Nancy and her family, then decided I’d best get the book back into the box.

Christmas was just a few days away. Every night I unwrapped that present and read a little more, getting closer to the mystery and Nancy.

Then Christmas morning rolled around. I made sure to act very surprised when I opened that gift. And I was excited, because now I could finish the book and find out the ending! And wasn’t I cleaver?

Not really.

Later that day when I was curled up on the couch reading, my mom sat down next to me and asked me how I liked the book. When I told her it was the best story ever, she said, she was glad, since I’d been reading it all week. Surprised, I asked how she knew.

She said, “You really shouldn’t turn down the corners to mark your place.”

Boxed set Edgars Family for Barnes and NoblePrizes: In honor of that Christmas I’m giving away a set of the print copies of The Edgars Family Novels to one reader and a set of the Westen Series books to another reader.

Lee McCloud (Mac) has a reputation as a loose cannon. So when a secret agency operating outside the law recruits him for his special operations skills his team leader Tally, a tough, attractive computer genius, is ordered to keep him on a tight leash. But a tight leash is the last thing Mac wants. His intent is to use the agency’s massive resources to track down Sophia, a close friend’s daughter, who has been kidnapped in Mexico.

From the beginning, sparks fly between Mac and Tally. Mac sees Tally as an office worker, not qualified for field operations. For her part, Tally views Mac as little more than a cold-blooded killer. The conflict escalates as the two are forced to play at husband and wife in order to get close to their next target.

Ignoring orders to stay out of trouble, Mac enlists the help of Scotty, a British soldier, and Jog, a Lebanese fixer. They follow the kidnappers’ trail to Paris, where events lead them to suspect Sophia is a captive of Sheik Khalid, a billionaire Saudi exile who is suspected of supporting terrorist groups by shipping weapons, drugs and slaves on his luxury vessel, Princess Aliya.

Mac and Tally discover they have feelings for each other, but events lead Mac to question whether Tally is working to another agenda. With time running out, the group dodges assassins, corrupt generals, evil medicos, Mossad agents, corrupt bureaucrats and sharks. But they cannot anticipate what is waiting for them on Khalid’s fortress island of Andaran, or that there’s much more at stake than Sophia…

This graphic thriller is not for the faint of heart. The characters are well-rounded, believable and many, downright terrifying. The topic, human trafficking, is all too real. From the first line, the reader is drawn into a sordid world where the ends justify the means. This book is a roller coaster ride through a sick “fun” house where the scary clowns are armed and dangerous and the air is tainted with evil.

I certainly felt the horror, agony and desperation of the victims and their families. There is no psychic distance. I bled for the victims. The sexual exploitation of children and the live organ harvesting were particularly hard for me to stomach, as the scenes nearly jumped off the page thanks to the author’s skill with words. Mac’s frustration and pain are palatable as he battles his personal demons and the near-misses in his quest to save his goddaughter. The casual cruelty of Khalid Yubani and his shard of society where life is cheap and “pleasure” is both violent and fleeting is all too believable.

This book is well written and the author is amazingly capable, which in this case makes for a difficult, emotionally exhausting read. No Remorse is compelling and riveting, but definitely not for everyone. The characters and their situations were so real, I found myself praying for them. This book is hard to put down, but I don’t know that I “liked” it as “like” isn’t a word I’d use for how I felt. I believe I may be too soft or the book to explicit for me.

If you enjoy highly suspenseful books that expose the seedy underbelly of a violent and amoral segment of the world where, whether the good guy wins or not, there’s a lot of collateral damage, and if you don’t mind graphic detail, I’m certain you’ll find Ian Walkley’s No Remorse gripping.
