I fall more in love with this series with every book. The relationships between Jess and her detectives, between Jess and Dan, and then her detectives with each other are fleshed out more and more with each installment. It makes me happy when the side characters are as real and as important as the main ones. Debra Webb has a firm grasp on this concept as well because I’m as invested in the relationship between Chet and Lori as I am with Jess and Dan.

Jess and Dan still struggle throughout this novel, partly because they’re still working out all the kinks involved with balancing a working relationship with a romantic one. But the bigger problem is he’s a bit too old fashioned for her tastes and she’s much too hardheaded for his. But it works, despite their arguing and frustration, because that’s real life for you. I think that, while neither will ever completely give in and give the other everything they want, they will eventually figure out what works for them and be happy.

Each novel in the Faces of Evil series ends with a cliffhanger and takes off from the moment you pick up the next. Revenge is no different. It is another action packed, race against time and evil for Jess Harris and her band of detectives. Debra Webb is a master at mixing intense situations, dramatic events and steamy romance into one storyline. I finish each novel begging for the next to arrive as quickly as possible.

I’m still having a bit of a love and hate relationship with Jess. I understand that she has to be arrogant, determined and sometimes a bit pushy to get things done, especially in such a male-dominated profession, but her constant refusal to accept any kind of help makes me a bit crazy. She is slowly learning, however, and if she’d just let go of her pride a tiny bit, she’d be a much more likable person. However, as a detective, all those things that make me crazy, make her awesome. That she doesn’t let propriety or Southern hospitality get in the way of getting answers makes me proud.

Jess and Dan have a new obstacle to overcome in this novel, in addition to all the crazies that seem to populate Birmingham. Their attempts to find a balance between work and fun isn’t as easy as they’d hoped it’d be. I found it very interesting to see how such a career-minded woman handles a budding relationship with a man who is essentially her boss.

Each new installment in the Faces of Death series by Debra Webb is better than the last. I love the way that they pick up within days or even hours of the previous book ending. I just think this poor woman needs a new identity if she’s going through this much in two weeks’ time! Power was an exciting and enjoyable mystery touched with enough romance to soften up the harsher edges of the crimes being investigated. The author does a fantastic job of getting to the nitty-gritty of the case while balancing it out with humor or love. I love this series – and author – more and more with each novel.

Jess has a lot of character growth in this installment. She learns to let go just a tiny bit and let others help her. In addition, she finds a real place of her own so she can begin to settle back into her life in Birmingham. I’m thinking this is the step she needed to stop being Chief Deputy Jess Harris or even Special Agent Harris twenty-four hours a day.

The relationship between Jess and Dan is strained in this novel when Jess’ ex-husband, Wesley, arrives from Los Angeles to help out on the possible gang involvement in one of the murders. It was interesting to see Jess interact with her former husband, it gave you some insight to her current state of being. It was also kind of fun to watch Dan get twisted up over the whole situation as well.

Probably my favorite part of this series is the way the author weaves the main plot with the subplots started in previous novels. For instance, in this fourth installment, you have the underlying threat of The Player, Eric Spears, as well as the tension with the Latino gang, MS-13, playing in the background while Jess runs around solving her cases. These subplots give depth to the novels and, for me, make them much more enjoyable. I really hope that the next book addresses the threat of The Player more because he is what started this all and I would love to see him again.

Rage is, in my opinion, my favorite of the series so far. Each novel builds on the last and the level of intensity moves up a notch. The Faces of Death has rapidly become one of my favorite series this year and I’m not sure I can hold out until July for the next release – I’m that hooked. What will Jess, Dan, and the Birmingham Police Department find lurking in their town next? We can only wait and find out.

This second installment in the Faces of Death series kicks off with a bang. Picking up only hours after Obsession ended, Impulse keeps the rapid pace set in the first novel and then ratchets it up. As much as I enjoyed Obsession, this second novel was even better.

Jess Harris has been through hell and back lately and it’s only about to get worse. Being targeted by a suspected serial killer can’t be fun. I do have to say that her character was much more approachable in this installment and I really grew to sympathize with her, which was a good thing. She did what she had to still, but came across as much more relatable this time around.

Dan Burnett, Birmingham Police Chief, has only one concern and that is keeping Jess safe. Even when it antagonizes her to no end, he still puts her safety before his own. I like Dan a lot and really enjoyed the brief bit of relationship development you get between them. I really hope that they work on it more throughout the next few novels as they make a great couple. Each is strong and independent, capable of being on their own, but they each also have their own little weaknesses that the other needs to attend to.

Oddly enough, I think my favorite character in this novel was the bad guy – The Player. Sophisticated, reserved, and thoroughly evil, he fascinated me and, to a point, charmed me. He is definitely the character I want to know more about, especially his motive in doing what he does.

Impulse was a wild ride of twists and unexpected turns that kept me reading long after I knew I should have stopped. Although part of the ending was a touch predictable, I understand why it went the way it did. Despite that, this was a highly enjoyable, completely engaging thriller that thrilled me to my toes. Highly recommended to any lover of intense, sometimes graphic thrillers.

Special Agent Jess Harris isn’t having the best week. Jess Harris is a tough character to get to like. She’s strong, independent, and spunky, but she’s also had a huge blow to her ego as well as her confidence. It’s this last part that makes her a bit unlikable in the beginning. She’s so determined to do everything on her own and in her own way that she doesn’t care whose toes she might step on. Thankfully, as she becomes more a part of the group and less the outsider, she loosens up a little bit. That said, once she lets the petty things go, she becomes a virtual force of nature in profiling the kidnapper of the missing women. She’s bright, she’s sharp, and she’s very, very good at her job. I think I liked her more in her obsessive agent mode than when she was just simply Jess. I’m looking forward to seeing more character growth with her in the next novel because she has the potential to be a great person to know.

Police Chief Dan Burnett is Jess Harris’ complete opposite. Warm and friendly and so very southern from the get-go, he’s a very likable character, even though he does have his moments. In a sense, he’s in a similar situation as Jess. These missing women have him stumped and his department has little to no evidence tying anyone to the crime. At times, he lets his pride get in the way, but for all intents and purposes, he admits to it and moves on much more quickly than Jess does. However, because of this, the two of them are very dynamic as a couple – both romantic and as investigating partners. Their tendency to butt heads a bit before compromising holds a lot of promise for romantic sparks later on.

Obsession is a joyride of emotions from the very first page. Between the main story of the missing women and the backstory involving the serial killer that Jess had been attempting to arrest, there is constantly something happening to keep you on your toes. The author’s style and the whirlwind of events in the story made this a fast read for me and the shocking conclusion has left me eager for the sequel.

This week’s topic is a book quote freebie.  Which is perfect since I seem to collect book quotes.  I have no real theme for today other than these quotes either made me laugh, cry, or think about something differently.

This is from The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix.  It struck me for two reasons.  A) because it’s true and B) because a man put that thought onto paper.  Granted, the narrator is female, but still.

  1. Guncle Rule number eight: Live your life to the fullest every single day, because every day is a gift. That’s why people die. To teach us the importance of living.

There are so many quotes that I wanted to include from The Guncle by Steven Rowley, but most of what I saved were a bit um… inappropriate (albeit hilarious) … for this post.  This one got me though.

From The Red Book by James Patterson and David Ellis.  This made me think of my daughter and how she’d react to such a sight.

From The Turn by Kim Harrison.  I love it when a character recognizes the ridiculousness of a situation.

From Sword of Destiny by Andrzej Sapkowski.  I love this because what a way to introduce a character, right?  Geralt knows it’s Dandelion (Jaskier) by the feather alone.

  1. But I was wrong—I don’t need a man to look past my size. I need someone who’ll see me and love me exactly as I am. For all its flaws, this show made me believe that that’s possible.

From One to Watch by Kate Stayman-London.

  1. He smiled. If it was not for the fact that she knew he was a vicious murderer, the expression would have been pleasant. Eric Spears was a handsome man. A charming man. A brilliant one. A cunning and deadly animal.

I’m including this because I very rarely get consumed by the bad guy.  However, from the very first book in Debra Webb’s Faces of Evil series, I was half in love with the psycho Eric Spears.  This quote comes from the short story “My Evil Valentine” that was a prequel to the series.

Bonus quote: “Castellan,” said Geralt, “why act in haste? After all, I really could have an accident at work, irrespective of my intentions. Just in case, the wise men should be thinking about how to save me from the king’s anger and get those fifteen hundred orens, of which rumor speaks, ready.”

This is from The Last Wish by Andrzej Sapkowski.  I laughed so dang hard when I read this.  Why?  Because Geralt is equating getting killed by a striga with a worker’s compensation claim.

“Sit. Rest,”Cara ordered before jumping out of the truck, leaving it running with the heater on full blast. “I’ve got this.”

Josh lost sight of her as she bucked the wind and rounded the cab toward the truck bed. He knew what she was after. This was no time for subtlety.

When she walked back to the front of the truck again, she had a tire iron in her hand. He couldn’t hear the glass break above the wind, but he saw the moment she slammed the heavy iron into a window in the back of the store. Wasting no time, she used the tire iron to clear the glass shards from the frame, then hitched herself up and crawled through the open window.

He closed his eyes. Absorbed the warmth from the heater. Mentally assessed his injuries, then checked his face in the rear-view mirror. Damn. He looked like he’d been run through a meat grinder. His cheek and eye were both swollen but the cut had quit bleeding.

Remembering that he’d spotted some fast foot napkins in the glove box, he leaned forward and rummaged around until he found them, then made an attempt to clean some of the dried blood off of his face. Better but not great. The lump on the back of his head had given him a helluva a headache and though they hurt like the devil, he suspected his ribs were bruised but not cracked or broken.

Over all, he’d had worse. He’d been worse. But at the moment, he couldn’t remember when.

A light came on in the back room, grabbing his attention. And a few minutes after that, Cara pushed the store’s back door open and hurried back to the truck.

He opened the window so she could hand up two rifles, two 9mm S&W handguns, magazines for all four weapons and several boxes of ammunition.

He wanted to kiss her. But there wasn’t time. “We could use a GPS,” he suggested as she climbed back up into the truck and behind the wheel.

She shot him a tight smile, unzipped her jacket and reached inside. “Will this do?”

He took stock of the ammo and magazines and stacked it on the console between them.

“Enough?” she asked.

Gia pounded her pillow in frustration. She hadn’t slept in two days. But even exhausted, sleep eluded her.

The screams of the dead girls echoed in her ears.

When she closed her eyes, their beautiful gazes, frozen in the shock of death, stared back at her.

She had to stop this madness before he reached a dozen. He could disappear. Or start over again next year.

Her phone buzzed on the nightstand and she snatched it, hoping again for a tip. Carly again.

The last thing she felt like doing was arguing with her sister tonight. She’d thought they had the holiday visit settled. It was just too hard for her to go back to that house. To the bedroom where she’d grown up. To the pictures on the mantle when they were together.

She rolled over and punched the pillow again. But the phone continued to ring. Battling anger and fatigue, she snatched it and connected the call. Before she could speak, a low wail echoed over the line.

“Help me, Gia…please help me!”

“Carly –”

Cold terror swept over Gia as the phone line died in her hand.
