COOL SUMMER READING

Hot enough for you? To celebrate with the Long and Short Reviews 7th Anniversary Celebration, I’m sharing a bit from my contemporary romance The Key to Love. It may be set in winter, with a blizzard as a key event, but hey – let the story take you away to those chilly days and nights while you’re reading on the beach!

The premise – artist Jennette Jacobson’s work is being shown at a gallery. When a handsome visitor claims that artwork is just “more junk to dust,” she’s a bit miffed. Jenn also finds a small metal object on the gallery floor and uses it later in a lovely new collage. Her world soon crumbles with family problems and a friend’s betrayal.meg mims beach read (2)

And wouldn’t you know that the same hunky guy from the gallery showing claims he lost an important key the night of the show! When Steve Harmon offers to buy Jenn’s work, believing the metal object is what he lost, she refuses to sell. He’ll just trash the collage – or is it possible that key will unlock a future romance?

This story was inspired by my own collage work – being an artist, I was able to relate to Jenn’s creative abilities. She’s at a vulnerable point in her life, too, with family problems muddying up the waters. Jenn may be wealthy in her own right, but money doesn’t always buy happiness. She’s also at odds with starting a new dating relationship. The Groundhog Day blizzard of 2011 plays a role in the novella, which was a “chilling” event and shut down the Midwest for days with howling winds and two or three feet of snow depending on the location.

Enjoy reading those cooling details while you’re broiling in the sun! I enjoyed writing this novella, and plan to continue Jenn and Steve’s “story” this year or next.

My writing schedule has been pretty busy lately, however, with another Christmas novella coming later this year to join Santa Paws and Santa Claws. I’m also one-half of the team D.E. Ireland for St. Martin’s Minotaur, writing the Eliza Doolittle and Henry Higgins series – Wouldn’t It Be Deadly, Book 1, will be released Sept. 23rd, and Move Your Blooming Corpse, Book 2, is coming in 2015. We’re excited about that!

Keep cool, and leave a comment with your email address – you’ll be entered in a giveway for a chance to win a free e-copy of The Key to Love.

Or is it possible that key will unlock a future romance?
