Summertime Travel

When the children were young, we used to travel during school breaks (almost always by car) to interesting places near popular attractions, amusement parks and even places we read about from major news events. Once in a while we would schedule our trip around my husband’s work assignments (freelance photographer) which gave us the wonderful opportunity to see American life away from tourist traps; afterwards we would swing over to a nearby tourist trap.

We traveled up and down the east coast (mainly) and the children, now grown and on their own, still talk about these trips and laugh about some of the amusing antics like when we told the kids they could have grilled cheese sandwiches if they just held the bread and cheese up facing Three Mile Island in the distance; okay maybe it was just a little cruel using their gullibility…

Our daughter has grown up with an insatiable wanderlust and has enjoyed quite a bit of international travel and, just like her childhood travels, they are not always ON the beaten track. Our son has grown up to enjoy long distance road trips and visiting all the places along his route. I would like to think that my husband and I have been at least, in part, good influences.

I deal with a different kind of travel in my latest novel Karma Visited which is a fun summer read.

Annie Furman experiences a rather unique skill, she “travels” while she sleeps. Traditionally this talent is referred to as Astral Projection, a form of out-of-body experience; however combined with her ability to go places, Annie often shows up in places where people are injured, dying or horribly frightened. Frustrated because she feels as if she is trapped in a nightmare and unable to physically do anything to help, Annie trains herself to wake long enough to alert authorities.

Even though she learns to control some of these paranormal events, Annie is unable to escape her own misfortune, an abusive husband who threatens her with confinement in a psychiatric ward. She feels desperate and loses all hope until the day she crosses paths with Undersheriff Dave Turner and he can see her while she is in the astral plane. Neither of them can understand why she can connect with him until the day he saves her in a twist of karma when all the help she’s delivered to strangers is finally returned.

I’m working on a sequel to Karma Visited. In this story Annie learns to control her travels a little bit more and with Dave’s encouragement she finds a way to help the people she meets in her “dreams”. Annie soon finds she isn’t alone in her ability. Will Dave be there to save her this time?

Whether you are planning a summertime trip or planning to lose yourself in a book, I hope that the rest of your summer is fun and memorable.

Undersheriff Dave Turner is investigating a series of home invasions and homicides. He has no idea that solving this case will lead him to the woman of his dreams.
