How old were you when you started writing?
I’ve always been a writer. Even as a little girl, I wrote short stories. Sometimes it was like fan fiction about my favorite characters from favorite books. Sometimes it was something new and totally my own. My mom and dad still have some of my old notebooks and even some floppy disks (seriously) full of stories from our family computer. It’s always been in my blood. I don’t remember a time when I wasn’t making up stories. When I was fourteen, my mom gave me LaVyrle Spencer’s Separate Beds and that cemented my love of the romance genre.
What’s the most difficult part of being a full-time writer? What’s the most rewarding?
Most difficult: That my co-workers/ colleagues/best work friends all live way too far away to have lunch on a regular basis!
Most rewarding: Emails from readers who read my book during a difficult period in their lives that helped them through it, or readers who see themselves in a character and feel validated or hopeful or encouraged by reading about those people like them.
To get your writing to ‘flow’, do you have any habits or rituals?
Just sitting down at the same time every day with my coffee and my music (sometimes) and getting to it.
What happens when the words just won’t come?
I let myself take time away from it. It’s always because I’m trying to force something that doesn’t want to happen or because I don’t understand my characters well enough. Stepping away always helps. Sometimes faster than others of course 🙂
If you had to choose one career highlight what would it be? What are some of your goals for the future?
I’m just so blessed to have so many. Honestly, every time my readers love a book or my editor sends me a gushy email feels like a highlight. I’ve been invited to be a part of some really amazing things with other authors. I’ve had some amazing conferences and research trips. I’ve hit the New York Times and the USA Today lists. There are so many!
Goals: I know I should have these. And I do. Word count goals and sales goals and such. But honestly, cheesy as it might sound, my goal is always to write books that make my readers say “wow”. That’s really the bottom line for me.
You have focused your career on writing charming, funny contemporary romance. Are there any other genres you might consider writing? Or are there genres that you know without a doubt aren’t right for you?
Aw thank you!! If I had to do anything else for some reason, it would probably be fantasy—like witches and wizards and stuff—with strong romantic elements 😉 As for genres I know are NOT for me? Suspense (I stink at suspense) and horror. No. Way.
When you aren’t writing, are you a reader? Do you have any favorite authors? Do you have a book you would like to recommend?
I’m a HUGE reader. I read every single day. My list of authors is immense. Some are friends and I’m so lucky to know these women (and get sneak peeks at their work and sometimes even help with it 😉 ) and some I’ve never met but admire and adore from afar. I couldn’t possibly list them all. My go-to answer to “favorite author” is always Susan Elizabeth Phillips because her books have stuck with me for years and her heroines are the kind of women I’m friends with 🙂 But I’m delighted on a regular basis by other romance authors. And I don’t take that for granted for a second.
Tell us a little about your newest release.
Going Down Easy is a hot, contemporary romance set in one of the sexiest cities in the country: New Orleans. I’ve loved New Orleans since my first visit there in 2011 and have been back multiple times. I fall more in love with the place every time I’m there. There’s just something about the city that calls to me. The music, the history, the laid-back attitude, the food…there’s just so much to love. So finally, the right characters and stories came along and it was time to write a series set there.
As far as flings go, single dad Gabe Trahan is pretty sure that Addison Sloan is his best bet. Once a month, Addison comes to New Orleans and then…It. Is. On. Until Addison returns to New York, it’s just hot, happily-no-strings-attached sex. And beignets. And jazz. But lately for Gabe, it isn’t nearly enough.
Sure, maybe Addison’s gotten a bit hooked on Gabe. After all, who can resist a guy who’s so sexy, so charming, and so…available? But maybe he’s too available for her right now. Addison’s just moved to New Orleans, and relationships are definitely off the table. Besides, guys always bail when they learn her secret: she’s a single mom.
Only Gabe’s not running. Worse, he’s thrilled. But Addison never signed up for ever-after romance, and Gabe won’t settle for anything less. Now it’s a battle of wills—and when it comes to the woman he’s falling for, Gabe isn’t above playing a little dirty.
About the Author:
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Erin Nicholas has been writing romances almost as long as she’s been reading them. To date, she’s written over thirty sexy, contemporary novels that have been described as “toe-curling,” “enchanting,” “steamy,” and “fun.” She adores reluctant heroes, imperfect heroines, and happily ever afters.
Erin lives in the Midwest, where she enjoys spending time with her husband (who only wants to read the sex scenes in her books), her kids (who will never read the sex scenes in her books), and her family and friends (who claim to be “shocked” by the sex scenes in her books).
