Five Things You Would Probably Never Guess about Me by Peter Stone

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Peter Stone, who is visiting with us to celebrate today’s release of his debut novel The Perfect Candidate.

Five Things You Would Probably Never Guess about Me

1) The summer after I graduated from high school, I was an intern in the Capitol Hill office of Congressman Gary Condit (before he was embroiled in the media circus surrounding the Chandra Levy murder). I later returned to Washington, D.C., where I was a Spanish tutor for former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich. (Both experiences inspired my debut novel!)

2) I have traveled to over 60 countries. Standouts include El Salvador, Myanmar, Rwanda, and Spain. Current wish list: Mongolia, Philippines, Russia. One of my most favorite things is landing in a new city with a guidebook (or trusted friend’s hit list) in hand.

3) I am the youngest of eight children, and I have 29 nephews and nieces. When I was in kindergarten, I took my oldest niece (a newborn at the time) to class for Show & Tell. My fellow five year olds found it challenging to accept that I was an uncle!

4) I am a National Speech & Debate Association National Champion in the Impromptu category. I think Speech & Debate tournaments are the best thing any teenager could do with their Saturdays.

5) I hate gum, caramel, and the moment in movies when the camera is from the point of view of the passenger, looking at the driver, and you know that a car is about to crash into them – from just outside the driver’s side window – any second. I lose all self-control around chips & guacamole; and film festivals, where I favor movies over sleep or food and try to see 6-7 films per day.

When recent high school graduate Cameron Carter lands an internship with Congressman Billy Beck in Washington, DC, he thinks it is his ticket out of small town captivity. What he lacks in connections and Beltway polish he makes up in smarts, and he soon finds a friend and mentor in fellow staffer Ariel Lancaster.
