Putting her divorce in her rearview and her kids in the minivan, Maddie Pearce heads home to Salem, Mass., in search of a new life. That new life isn’t supposed to include finding a portal to the past hidden in the closet of her aunt’s house—a past that has magic, sorcerers and a possible way to heal her special needs son. And she certainly isn’t expecting the brooding, handsome lord whose bedroom lies on the other side of the portal…and who seems determined to keep Maddie in her own world.

The last thing Morgan of Pencastle wants to see is another witch oblivious to her powers stepping through the portal wall. Then the beautiful, sexy Maddie steps into his world. And keeps coming back.

Maddie needs Morgan’s help, and together they try to build a bridge between the worlds. If only fate isn’t so determined to keep them worlds apart…

Wow! A literary equivalent to “Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride”. There really wasn’t much “down time” in this action-packed romance. It seemed that Maddie started out as she meant to go on. . . curious and bent on action. Admittedly, some of the action included moving to a different town and making a better life for her family, but also some of her action did NOT include her children or her mother!

Between her mother and her institutionalized aunt, reconnecting with old friends and making new ones, Maddie isn’t sure about the strange view from her closet. After their first meeting, Morgan is SURE he doesn’t want a repeat, though. The fact that our hero is interested in Maddie as a woman, but not as a witch or an accidental time-traveler makes for some interesting conversations as well as setting the scene for the ensuing conflict.

Maddie’s life is one long conflict. Between her personal issues, her children, her middle son’s “disability”, her mother’s “meddling” and criticisms, the added twists of finding the link between worlds, finding out her aunt’s role in the link and Morgan’s attitude, as well as the house fire keep the story moving. It is a consistent read, making it difficult to put the book down.

This is not a difficult book to read, and if you can put it down, you will be able to pick up the plot fairly quickly and drop right into the story. Please note: I said “if”, because I never wanted to!

Even with the chaos surrounding Maddie’s life, there is plenty of opportunity for some hot interludes. And it is good and hot! There are the typical misunderstandings, and thoughts kept to themselves that create conflict, but when Maddie and Morgan get together, the pages fair to sizzle!

The ending surprised me but somehow it felt fitting and satisfying at the same time. It gives a more “realistic” way to deal with the issues surrounding the hopping between time periods and the relationships created when Morgan does this. It also allows for the continual presence of her son and her aunt in her life.

I was interested in this book from the start, but was caught up quickly with Ms. Otto’s characters, plot lines, and the seemingly endless possibilities. I definitely recommend this book to everyone, and wonder about future visits with Morgan and Maddie . . . .
