When Giorgio Giovanni tracks the troublesome Jemima down in a hospital bed in Italy, he has one thing on his mind—revenge. However, the fragile woman he encounters is not the devious female he remembers. When it becomes clear that she is in danger, he risks everything to keep her safe.

Left for dead, Jemima wakes up in hospital, terrified, and with no idea of her identity. The angry man, who comes to claim her, is the only link to a shared past she can’t remember. A past that threatens to destroy them, and all she has ever held dear.

With danger all around them, and their sexual chemistry off the scale, can they find their way back to each other, or is the past too devious to tame?

This was the first book I’ve read from Doris O’Connor. I have to say that I was impressed with the intricate web of deceit that was woven throughout the entire story.

It was the blurb that caught my attention. I wanted to know what devious things Jemima had done to inspire such cold indifference in her husband. The poor woman was just out of a coma after being mowed down by a speeding car. And here everyone was calling her a bad penny and treating her like crap.Threatening her very life. I was sure it would turn out to be a misunderstanding. Another classic story of a good woman done wrong…you know…the kind that draws me like a moth to a flame. But this writer threw me for a loop and changed the game around. Turns out Jemima wasn’t so innocent, and instead it was Giorgio who was wronged.

Ten years ago, Giorgio Giovanni was glad to see the back of his wife, Jemima. Now, she’s turned up again, the victim of a brutal hit and run, and claiming amnesia. He checks it out, and is skeptical of how much she has changed. Gone is the flamboyant woman he knew, leaving a fragile and broken one in her place. Seems that Jemima had been into some bad stuff that got her into a bad place. He didn’t know the extent of her betrayal but it all started to come out as more of her memory returned. It was a complicated plot, one that the writer brought together perfectly.

I liked Giorgio. I liked that he wanted to protect Jemima, even believing the things he did about her. He felt remorse because he never tried to find Jemima after she walked out of his life, and then those terrible things happened to her. Not to ruin the secret or anything, but he had ties to some very bad people. And he was shattered to discover the real instigator of those sordid events.

I even came to like Jemima in the end. She was no angel, for sure. But neither did she deserve what happened to her. She had some daddy issues, and was acting out to cover up the pain. And I felt that she really did love Giorgio, since she made a big sacrifice for him.The writer did redeem her character, just a tiny bit. My heart still broke for the heroine, just in a different way than I’d expected when starting the story.

I really enjoyed the story, the writing was flawless. The thing is…I like to be shown and not told. It’s a personal preference of mine. The writer showed the slow rebuilding of Giorgio and Jemima’s intimate relationship. She was a broken woman…in more ways than one. She wasn’t ready for the intimacies she and Giorgio had shared before. For instance, they both alluded to having enjoyed a BDSM relationship of sorts. I never really saw it, but the writer was obviously taking into consideration Jemima’s past. With the exception of an ill fated incidence with some scarves, and some vaguely mentioned toys and spankings, that was about as far as the story strayed into kinky town. The intimate scenes were steamy, don’t get me wrong. I enjoyed them very much. They seemed to be scripted more toward a rebuilding of the trust between Jemima and Giorgio. More romantic and sweet, and I did like that.

Anyway, I got my happy ending, and it was a fun ride to get there. The plot was engaging, and quite suspenseful. If you’re looking for a story that will pull at your heart strings then be sure to give this one a try.
