The mystery was fascinating. I had several theories about who Frank was and how he ended up in the profession he did. Seeing if any of my guesses were correct was interesting because of how rarely the author chose to give the audience more clues about what was really going on. I enjoyed the process, though, and was so invested in finding out what the answer was that I read this whole story in one sitting.
There were some pacing issues in the beginning. The narrator spent a lot of time setting up what was happening and describing Frank’s recovery from injuries that had damaged his longterm memory. While this background information was really interesting, it took up a disproportionate amount of space in this tale. This sort of beginning would have worked really well for a longer piece, but it was a little too lengthy for something this size.
One of the things I appreciated the most about the final scene was how much it made me want to know what happened next. While it tied up all of the plot strings that needed to be addressed, it also left ample room for the sequel. I’ll definitely be curious to see what happens in part two. This is a sign of a good ending to me!
The Rectifier has snagged my attention. It’s an intriguing start to a brand new series, and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens with it next.
