Samantha Savage, Book 1

Samantha Savage awakens in a hospital with no memory of how she got there. No memory at all, really—not even of the sexy man claiming to be her husband.

She’s assured her memory will return, but she can’t shake the feeling she doesn’t belong here, mired in suburbia…glimpsing strange creatures in dark corners. Dreaming of fighting demons for possession of a glowing pink pearl.

Josh West, a sorcerer thief, will do almost anything for money, but seducing an amnesiac slayer for The Company crosses the line. Yet if he fails to keep his bargain with the evil leaders of Diablo to persuade his oh-so-sexy “wife” to lead him to the Pearl of Wisdom, both of them will pay with their lives.

Sam can’t help falling for Josh, but as memory gradually returns and she uncovers the conspiracy behind the search for the pearl, she becomes less and less sure of which way to turn. She could trust in his love and join him to keep the pearl away from Diablo. Or return to her hard-won career as a slayer—and let him take the fall.

The plan was simple: grab the demon slayer and convince her to give up the location of the Pearl of Wisdom. But when the minions of Diablo mess it up, Samantha Savage ends up unconscious in the street. When she does finally awaken, it’s to the sight of a handsome and attentive man at her hospital bedside, holding her hand and telling her he’s her husband. With her memory, at least for the moment, MIA, she has no reason to doubt that she is, in fact Mrs. Joshua West. But while her heart wants to believe, her subconscious keeps showing her scenes of battling demons, and strange beings surrounding her. As she recovers at home, she meets her neighbors, a very strange and unsettling group of people. Not everything is as it appears in the little neighborhood, least of all her ‘loving husband’. Josh is actually a sorcerer thief, and is trying to locate the Pearl of Wisdom for Diablo. But as he grows closer to Samantha, he can’t help but wonder if there is another way. Can Sam trust Josh, or will he betray her once he has what he was sent for? Can Josh convince Sam that he has he best interests at heart, and that she can trust him? Will they both pay the ultimate cost for defying Diablo by not giving him what he wants?

The Forgetful Demon Slayer is the first book in Beverly Rae’s newest series, featuring Samantha Savage, a demon slayer for The Company. I have to say, Ms. Rae has a most fertile imagination, and I enjoyed visiting this new world she’s built. She has created a neighborhood filled with paranormal characters masquerading as human, each more unusual than the one before. The character development in this is superb, with small details fully realized and each personality fully developed. I can’t wait to see where she will take me next.

Samantha Savage is a demon slayer, one of the best. She’s strong and intelligent, but as we first meet her, she has no idea who or where she is. When she wakes up in the hospital, she believes that the handsome and concerned man at her bedside is really her husband, at least her heart does. I enjoyed watching as Sam tries to put the pieces of her life back together as her memory begins to come back. She comes to care for her ‘husband’ and wonders how she could have ever been friends with some of her neighbors, who all seem to have very strange habits. I liked watching as Sam learned who she really was, and how hard she tried to keep it to herself.

Josh West is smart, handsome and very strong in his magic. He is a thief, but I liked him for his loyalty and his determination to do the right thing about Sam once he begins to care for her. As he continues his charade of being her husband, he grows to love the person Samantha is, and tries to protect her from Diablo’s minions. I liked that the more Sam gets her memories back, the deeper his feelings become for his ‘wife’, and he discovers just how far he will go to keep her in his arms.

I love the ‘gated community’ filled with demons and other minions of Diablo, all there to keep Sam from getting away and hiding the Pearl of Wisdom from everyone, even though she doesn’t remember a thing about it. I loved the passion that grows between Sam and Josh, and enjoyed watching as Sam slowly pieced together her missing life. Of course, this is Beverly Rae, so the bedroom scenes are beyond hot, and are not limited to the bedroom either. This is a fun and very hot reading experience, and I can’t wait for more from Samantha’s world. And there is a warning attached to this, with mention of ice, fans, and toys, so be warned and enjoy.
