Mage Zo, her brother, King Seve, and her twin sister, Alicia, rule over the island of Iram. Their paternal grandfather left the mainland forty years ago to avoid his brother’s tyranny. The island has become a sanctuary, a home to them all, but now that is being threatened. King Seve has been poisoned and Alicia has cast an ancient binding spell to slow the action of the poison. Zo must return to the mainland to find a rare flower which is the antidote’s main ingredient. Without the antidote, both Seve and Alicia will die.

I really like Zo. She is a very strong woman with a deep love for her brother and sister. She is a strong mage with many powers, and at the start of the novel, she doesn’t think she needs any help to fulfill the quest for the Flower of Rosem. Fortunately, Alicia feels differently and insists that Zo have a few companions to help her. Zo has lived an isolated life on Iram and she has no desire to get involved with the war King Vindha is waging in his drive to conquer all the nations in this world. She just wants to get to the flower and bring it home, and she has to do that in less than three weeks.

The task becomes nearly insurmountable almost from the beginning and Zo needs all the help she can find. I like the way Zo learns quickly about the new world she has to traverse, and I appreciate the fact that she is a real three-dimensional character who matures as the quest continues. At first she thinks bringing a bodyguard along is totally unnecessary, and she doesn’t want Arkon to slow her down. Arkon is a remarkable man in his own right, able to help without offending, and as the adventures continue it becomes clear to them both that magic alone won’t solve their problems. Arkon’s swordsmanship along with his loyalty and ingenuity are needed a number of times. Zo, Arkon, and Leo only survive because they learn to work together.

This book captured me in the first paragraph, and I couldn’t put it down. It is a great story with engaging characters. The suspense holds right through to the end. This is the first novel in a trilogy, but it does come to a satisfactory stopping point. That being said, I sincerely hope that Reed is writing furiously on the next two volumes as I for one don’t want to have to wait too long to find out what happens to Zo and the others living on Iram. This is a first rate fantasy novel which I am certain all lovers of fantasy will find captivating and riveting.
