Nick is trying to help out his uncle, but has been tied up–literally-–by a sprite who controls vegetation in an Australian rainforest. Chrissie knows what she wants, and she wants Nick. Using such interesting descriptions as “four-legged propulsion units” to describe reindeer, the author really immersed me into the world she created. This is not the same world we live in, but her lively descriptions made me feel as if I knew it just the same.
Reading both Chrissie and Nick’s thoughts in first person was an interesting choice, but one I felt worked quite well with the originality and fun feel of this short story. The characters’ personalities were very clear to me due, in part, to the first-person. They were fun and quirky, and I found myself liking both of them a lot.
There isn’t a firm relationship built through this hot encounter, but the couple is left at a place that could lead there–if not a “happily” ever after, we get a “hopefully” ever after.
