Luke Schumaker designs computer games, working from his home. Every day he walks his dog in the woods nearby, never suspecting that someone who is completely smitten is watching. The watcher is Alex Shaw, and he too works from home, designing logic and crossword puzzles. Alex’s options are limited: he’s too shy to approach Luke and his wheelchair won’t let him follow into the woods. His solution? Secret messages for Luke in the crosswords he writes for the local paper. When Luke decodes them, romance begins, but then they face greater puzzles, like Alex’s interfering sister and what commitment to a man in a wheelchair really takes. And, most puzzling of all, how do you know if love is real?

Would you be afraid or would you be intrigued? Luke Shumaker, one never to turn his back on a good puzzle, is very much intrigued.

Luke Shumaker is a bit of a geek. Working from home as a computer game designer, he spends most of his time with his dog in the park or in his little apartment. He’s mostly happy with his life, but don’t we all want a little bit more? He finds his little bit more in the form of a crossword puzzle that seems to be directed at him. I found Luke to be sweet, funny, and a bit obnoxious in a good way. That kind of obnoxious that is endearing once you get to know someone. He’s definitely the kind of guy you turn to when you need your spirits lifted.

Alex Shaw is a different kind of animal altogether. Wheelchair bound, he’s a game designer of another sort, working with logic and crosswords. While I liked Alex a lot, he’s a bit too naive even considering his circumstances. While his naivete can be overlooked, the fact that he tends to be self-sabotaging can’t. I get that he’s been hurt before but there are times when he automatically assumes the worst and runs from the confrontation that could explain everything.

Puzzle Me This is a refreshing story of love against the odds, putting people before their circumstances. I loved the concept of luring someone into meeting you via hints in a crossword puzzle. It was fun and unique and utterly adorable. Also, it was so nice to have a hero who wasn’t a perfect bodybuilder kind of man. Puzzle Me This is a sweet, sad, sexy and enjoyable read.
