In it Joel reminds her of his love for her, and has included a gift disk to a virtual reality company called Private Pleasures. They’d often joked about being rich enough to use their services, and now Joel’s insurance money enables her to do just that. He wants her to live out her wildest sexual fantasy, and at the end of the journey, there’s a special surprise awaiting her.
Nearly everyone has fantasies that they’ve never confessed to anyone else. Natasha is lucky enough to get a chance to fulfill all of hers.
The setting caught my attention immediately. Enough details were provided about the society that the main character lived in that I understood why Natasha was intrigued by things that I find completely commonplace. What really kept me guessing, though, were all of the questions that the plot explored without answering. There’s something to be said for leaving certain details up the audience’s imagination. In this case, it worked pretty well.
I would have liked to see much more time spent on the sex scenes in this tale. Natasha was rushed through the different scenarios incredibly quickly. Based on how much time was spent explaining why and how this character was introduced to Private Pleasure, I expected her experiences there to be explained in just as much detail. It was disappointing to see that they were not.
The ending worked really well with everything else that was going on in the plot. I figured out what was coming ahead of time, but it was still fun to have my prediction validated. There seems like there could be room for a sequel here if Ms. Devereaux decides to write one. While I don’t know if this is something she is planning to do, I’d be curious to read it if she does!
Private Pleasures is a good choice for anyone who likes science fiction with a sexual twist.
