Romy was his high-school sweetheart; then she broke his heart. Twenty-five years later, she drops by his office as if nothing has happened, and asks for protection.

Despite Romy’s considerable charms, L.A. private eye Floyd Hunter stands firm and refuses to take on her case. When she is assassinated and dies in his arms, revenge is a matter of honor. Within twenty-four hours, seven people are dead, and Hunter learns a thing or two about his old flame that he could have done without knowing.

A visit from the past sets gumshoe Floyd Hunter on an unusual investigation. A hint that something wasn’t right about his ex-girlfriend’s past causes him to search for clues about her life and those connected with her. He uncovers more than he bargained for but is determined to persevere until he solves the mystery.

How can a story encompass all the above genres in only thirteen pages? Difficult I admit, but Mr Waymire did this admirably. Floyd is a great character who acts as a dedicated gumshoe, not the usual dirty raincoat, cigarette smoking type. His determination to solve the mystery carries him through many difficult situations, uncovering mysteries and solving problems. Add a touch of paranormal and you have a good story, albeit short. A nice read and well worth a rating of four.
