Walking home from a late-night shift at the hospital, Amy Bennett unwittingly stumbles into the violent, mysterious world of sexy Rhys Morgan. She wants him at once, but he’s a man with dangerous secrets, and despite the explosive attraction between them, he seems determined to push her away.

One of the oldest of his kind, the intense Immortal warrior Rhys spends his nights on the streets of Chandler protecting the city from the demons that threaten to overrun it. Though strong, he now has a weakness…Amy.

His gift of premonition has always been a curse, and more so since Amy’s death has begun haunting his dreams. But she’s part of his world now, and Rhys doesn’t know how to save her, or how to protect his heart.

No matter how much you fight it, you just can’t escape destiny…

Rhys figured out a long time ago that relationships were not meant for him. Everyone he cared about ended up getting killed. So when he starts having less than pleasant visions of a mystery woman named Amy, the last thing he wants is to meet her in the flesh. But it seems Amy has other ideas, whether intentional or not. When his dream girl shows up for real in the midst of a nasty fight with a demon, Rhys knows his plans to stay away from her are shot to hell. She not only has a knack for getting into trouble, but she manages to get under his skin and make him feels things he’d buried long ago. Before long, Rhys realizes that a life with Amy means she’ll constantly be in peril, but a life without her isn’t worth living, especially when its for eternity.

If Rhys thinks Amy is helpless, he’s got another “think” coming. Skilled in martial arts, she can hold her own. And she’s certainly not above kicking ass and taking names later, if the need arises. Aside from her sick karate skills, though, Amy has a good heart and is willing to sacrifice herself, if need be, to save the ones she cares for. Both Amy and Rhys have some old wounds to be healed, but it’s going to take some serious trust and a little bit of faith on both sides to make this relationship work. Rhys will have to let go of some of his overwhelming need to protect and shelter, and Amy will have to let a man take a little bit of control of her life—something neither is too happy about doing. Despite the danger, despite their fears, sometimes, there’s just no fighting the laws of attraction.

I really enjoyed Immortal Duty. Unknowingly at the time, I recently read the third book in the series and had commented how I’d hoped for more stories about the secondary characters. I was delighted, to say the least, to discover not one but two more tales the whet my appetite! Eager to get my mitts on the other two, I snatched them up and dove in. I must say, Ms. Coi definitely does not disappoint. I may have started in the wrong order, but it certainly didn’t distract from the plot at hand. In fact, I felt like I already knew some of the secondary characters when they came into play and was able to relate. Other than a few sentences that seemed to have extra or missing words, I found very few editing errors. Ms. Coi does a wonderful job with Rhys’ and Amy’s character development. There were times I wanted to strangle them both as they were equally hard-headed and frustrating, but their struggles were believable, and that to me is what makes a good story.

Kudos to Ms. Coi for another excellent tale. You piqued my interest in book three and reeled me in with book one. I’m dying to see what happens in book two. Might there be a book four and five? I can think of a couple of secondary characters that could use a good story of their own—Roland, Kane, Gideon—need I go on? *grin*

If demon-fighting heroes and kick-butt heroines are your thing, then be sure to check out Ms. J.K. Coi’s Immortal Duty. The characters are larger than life—literally, Rhys is huge with an equally large level of testosterone to go with his massive and muscled frame—and the plot is filled with enough excitement, steamy sex, and danger that kept me eagerly turning the pages. I thoroughly enjoyed it from page one to The End and will likely read it again sometime.
