Review by Poppy

From the time she was a little girl, Rose Piper was sure of two things: she wanted to work with animals and she wanted to win the heart of her best friend, Andy Reed.

Now the most sought-after conservation biologist in the Northeast, she’s trying to convince herself that one out of two isn’t bad.

Andy spent most of his life following his dream of becoming a builder. Now a successful land developer, he has returned to Black Creek to win the girl he has loved since high-school and hurt too many times: Rose

But efforts to keep their love together turn dangerous when a decades-old secret brings a murderer out of hiding, sending the pair running for their lives.

With stupendously good character building, RT Wolfe hooked me from the first line, completely invested me in Rose and Andy and made me love them so much, I couldn’t help but keep turning pages to find out what happened to them.

With a far heavier accent on romance than mystery, Flying in Shadows has turned out to be one of the best books I’ve read this year. The first half or so of the book is all about Rose and Andy growing up together. Sounds kind of dull, right? No at all. I hung on every word. Truthfully, I think the author could give classes on creating the kind of characters a reader will love so much, they’d be happy to read about them hanging wallpaper. When Rose is jealous, I felt jealous. When she and Andy kiss for the first time, I all but felt the caress. When hearts are broken, mine shattered right alongside them.

Though the book includes a murder right at the start, the mystery is layered in just a little here and there and doesn’t dominate until the last few chapters. And, though I chose to read this book because I’m a huge fan of romantic suspense, I didn’t feel at all cheated. In fact, I have every intention of going back to buy the first book by the author, Black Creek Burning, and am praying that the next book is about Duncan (it is, right, Ms. Wolfe? Please say yes… ). I’m such a fan, she’s an auto buy.

As mentioned, this is the second book in the series, and while I have a feeling I might have read about some characters from the first book, I didn’t feel as though I was missing anything. This book very easily stands alone.

So, if you like a book with strong, real, three dimensional characters, a completely enjoyable plot, a touch of mystery and a ton of heart, I highly recommend Flying in Shadows. I sincerely doubt you’ll be disappointed.

  1. thank you for hosting

  2. Dear Poppy,
Thank you for the flattering review! I’m honored.
Book 1 of the Black Creek Series, Black Creek Burning, and this book were written as stand-alones. Black Creek Burning came out in February and hit the Amazon best seller list. Reviewers are telling me they like Flying in Shadows even more. It’s truly humbling. Both books feature the same characters (Andy and Rose are very young) and take place in and around fictitious Northridge, New York and Black Creek.
Yes, book 3, Dark Vengeance, features Andy’s brother, Duncan. It comes out this month! Although books 1 and 2 could certainly be read in any order, Dark Vengeance should be read last as it reveals new secrets, twists and brings everything together.
I’m just not ready to put these characters away. Currently, I’m writing a novella that ties together the Black Creek Series and a new series I’m thinking of titling the Nickie Savage Series. I also have a sort of a sea escape/scuba diving/sea turtle conservationist/treasure/murder series that I’m outlining right now.
Can I just quit my day job and write?
Thanks again, Poppy. You made my day. 🙂

    Wow. What a great review!

  20. I’m hook, line and sinker on the Black Creek series! I can’t put them down! Author R.T. Wolfe has an addicting storytelling style that wraps the reader up and plops them right down in the middle of the scene. She builds REAL PEOPLE that we care about. The romances are beautiful and the mysteries are stumpers! LOVE Books 1 and 2. Good luck on book 3!

  21. Excellent review. I agree. Fabulous read. Looking forward to book 3.

  22. Serena Clarke says

This sounds amazing – I love a book where things slowly build and come together for a great finish. And a ton of heart alongside the mystery sounds perfect. TBR list for sure! 🙂 (Also very intrigued by the sea escape/scuba diving/sea turtle conservationist/treasure/murder series concept!)

  23. R.T. Has mastered story-telling in the second book of the Black Creek Series. Her writing is stupendous and keeps me up at night turning pages. Her characters are real and believable, and their troubles make readers pine for them. Way to go!

  24. Wow…great review. And well-deserved. I LOVED this book!
