While that may sound like an ungracious and uncomplimentary comment, it is neither. Double Masquerade is a good story, well written and packed with untapped potential. I wanted more, much more.
Ms. Fox’s characters are delightful, her story packed with humour and emotion. Her heroine, Jane, the Honourable Miss Lumley is in a bind in as much she’s found an occupation she love, but which is discovered will bring disrepute upon herself and her family, so when success and recognition beckons she is faced with a dilemma.
As for her hero, Lachlan, Lord Stathmore, well… Jane has met her match and goes to extraordinary lengths to try and outwit him. Needless to say she fails, and it is how Ms. Fox creates the pits and falls these two tumble into, that kept this reader engaged. So much so, that I would have like this story to be three times the length as, in places, it seemed the author skimmed the surface of the plots.
The author’s writing is vivid and compelling, I found myself totally engaged with Jane and her problems. I felt as though I was travelling at Jane’s shoulder throughout the story.
Ms. Fox is an author to watch out for and I would read more of her books.
